Music streaming sites/ apps?
« on: 12 October, 2023, 02:13:11 pm »
Which music streaming site do use/ rate?    Thinking mainly of Android/Windows/PC based, but I know many must use Apple Music - no Apple devices here atm. :)

I've tried Spotify before - but only trials rather than regular subs.  I once played loads of carols at Xmas using spotify & was suggested carols for a long time after Christmas had come & gone.  ;D

Anyone use YouTube Music?  The choice / suggestion algorithms seem quite good.  Not tried Amazon Unlimited...

Currently using Tidal.

Their privacy policy seems a bit more reasonable than the others, in terms of sharing/selling data. I stopped using Spotify years ago when they went evil. I don't want to share my viewing/listening habits with Google so Youtu.be is out for me.
Thus far there's only been one artist for which I couldn't find all their back catalogue. I wish there was a way of controlling Tidal running on the laptop from Tidal running on a mobile phone.

I've been tempted to move to Qobuz on account it's slightly cheaper when you pay for an annual subscription. But the 'My Daily Discovery' feature has been very good, in terms of the algorithm finding new music I enjoy.

I've been buying CDs (and occasionally LPs and Cassette Tapes) - particularly for less well known artists I want to support. I'd rather not stream music at all but it's an almost necessary convenience when spare time is in such short supply and broadcast radio is so poor.

I buy on Bandcamp (good for independent and small artists), as most of the money goes to the artists.

Listen on Spotify.

I was using Spotify, but it stopped working on my Google speaker.
So now trying Youtube Music. So far, just on a free account. Seems pretty good, not too many adverts. Though can get a bit repetitive, playing the same songs. Hopefully will improve as it learns what I like.

Thanks all.  Will check out Tidal/Qobuz/Bandcamp.

On free YT music, I've found advert frequency to be time of day dependent.  In the evening, esp slightly later, the adverts seem to really 'drop off'...  I'm on a months free trial atm.  Finding it pretty good, though subs of £12.99pm would be pricey.

I given up caring about what google knows.  Still have timeline activated - which tracks my every move too.   ;)
