The Bristol Beacon

Might warrant a thread of its own, depending on the publicity it gets...

This old hall got rebuilt, and renamed. As they dug down into it they found more and more stuff that cost more money to put right. over £100m, I think. What is there now is an amazing space, well, quite a few spaces. Last night we saw round, and to cap it off there was a pianist doing piano stuff from the 1820s (Schubert..?)

It is simpler than it looks.

Very excited about returning to Bristol to see Billy Bragg there on Dec 5th. My very first gig was in the same building around 1973 - the New Seekers, but I followed that up with a whole string of more worthy adventures at the same venue: Siouxsie and the Banshees was probably the most memorable, but also Iggy Pop with the Slits as support, Thin Lizzy, Kim Wilde, Steve Hackett, Brand X, Judie Tzuke. I went through several 'phases' as a yoof.

Excited at the prospect of being able to ride down Colston St without having to stop at the lights.  ;D

We are going to see The Penguin Cafe Orchestra, not sure if it is in the main hall, or the Lantern.

Billy Bragg is doing an intimate support gig just up the road from me, so that will be easier than schlepping into Bristol!

The hollow columns have been described as "a Roman hot air heating system".

The Penguin Cafe played there as part of the opening weekend, and the last gig of their tour.

Is that because all the amazing new bands that play there before becoming famous are now famous, so need bigger venues?
