Well how do I get the old patches off and start again if I don't have a hair dryer?

Press the patch on a hot frying pan.  And if you haven't got a frying pan, you really must get one  ;)

You can carefully peel them.

The tube may rip if it's not heated first, especially an ultralight one.

Ah yes.  I've only had to do it on Halfrauds special thick stuff where the rider had badly applied a patch.

I'd be worried about a frying pan though...    How about steaming off over a kettle?

I know the frying pan method works.  Just press the patch against it for a few seconds.  It does't have to be ridiculously hot, just hot.

I suppose heat from kettle steam would work too.

I'll borrow a hair dryer I think.

Odd  that I can't just bin the two tubes.

But even got a puncture today with out a spare and evans kindly lent me a couple of levers and a pump to do the swap.

+1 for bining punctured tubes.  I carry two spares and a pack of Park instant patches in case I run out of spares.  I never fix a tube.  Given the lengths some of you seem to go to to ensure a good patch confirms that my time is too precious to spend time fixing something that only cost £2.50.  Less than a decent coffee.
1.  A tube can be patched in minutes, and it is some of us find it theraputic.

2.  I can't afford to buy cups of coffee unless I save some £2.50s.

3.  Some tubes cost consderably more than £2.50.

4.  It's environmentally friendly to repair rather than replace.
5. £2.50 is far too much for coffee. :)

Interesting how the tube:coffee price ratio varies.

Here, decent tubes are 200 rupees. Indian made ones, which tend to be a bit leaky, are 50 rupees. That's about L2.50 and 60p respectively.

A cup of coffee costs 5 rupees at the roadside, 9 rs from the India Coffee Board Coffee House, or a whopping 25 rs from a Western-style cafe.

It can thus be concluded that the sub-continental cyclist has more coffee-drinking incentive to repair tubes.
Or simply take them to the local puncher wallah who will mend them for 10 rupees.

Well tried the hair dryer and the patches did not want to come off.

Tried a butane soldering iron an once again nothing.

Will try the fying pan later but the patches seem very well attached.  The patches and rubber solution are rem tip top ones.

Enough heat and enough picking should do it, but it's not worth it if it takes a lot of trouble.  Time for a new tube.

Is it only me who swaps the tube by the road but when I get home I repair and replace the tube again to reclaim the pristine tube for my spare?

When you bin a tube you're not throwing money away you're adding time at work  :hand:

They won't stick as well as proper patches.

Why keep a pristine tube doing nothing, it's like buy a new bike and not using it. The pristine tube will serve better in your tyre. I don't do it.
