Just in from Hyde Park.  Support acts meh, His Bobness was as close to Rockin' Bob as we're ever likely to see again.  And Neil Young was utterly brillsticks, doubly so on "Rocking In The Free World".

My back aches, my feet are killing me and I'd do it again tomorrow.  Though I'd probably need a wheelchair.

Public Service Broadcasting at the Proms last night doing Race for Space with an orchestra and choir. Bloody brilliant and for a bunch of tie wearing tweedies they sure do rock!

Szun Waves. A trio of saxophonist, drummer and techy person with Mac and button things. They are sat near me in the Artist Village right now.  :P

Very interesting tight soundscapes, with three clever, accomplished musicians, glad I checked them out.

The Orb last night in Brighton. The venue had a club night later, so they were on at 8ish. It was a decks and laptop set, with a fun projection show and a dancer with hoola hoops for little fluffy clouds. Lots of fun, lots of dancing.

Kraftwerk:rewerk

An orchestral reimagining of kraftwerks werk...

Played by an orchestra with 25% identified as disabled. On a stage set with 64 separately amplified lines. Yes, that’s 64 amplifiers. Never heard an amplified orchestra like it. The musicianship was very good, and the sound quality outstanding.

Conducted by Charles Hazlewood.

A few more from the weekend.

Some of you may recognise this guy

Brilliant musician from Mumbai, playing in the d&b Soundstage, a 64 amplifier system that presents the sound as it actually is, not through 2 channels. Outstanding.

Two of Rura, a high enegery band from the place that Boris forgot.

The Kraftwerk:rework - again in the d&b Soundstage, and the first time I've heard an amplified orchestra where you can hear all the instruments.

and finally the maestros again, sorry, couldn't resist

In my continuing recruitment drive - Withered Hand at the Old Cinema Laundrette* in Durham. Nearly a full band, just the drummer** missing. Cracking show, tiny audience. My favourite kind of gig!

*It really is a lanundrette - they play in front of the dryers.

 Saw the brothers in Brighton and Hammersmith last year. Missed them on the Wonky touring, those were my first shows since 2009. Damn good to have them back. And that staging is brilliant...

Got back from Greenbelt yesterday. Loads of great music as well as some thought inspiring talks that belong in p&obi.

The contrast of going from the sacred music of the st martins in the field singers in the garden of the country house to Brass Against on the main stage being very loud and angry.

I returned from my usual Shrewsbury festival trip yesterday. Many highlights, with a couple singled out. By 'highlight', YMMV.

1. Grace Petrie. Butch, lesbian, socialist. Think Billy Bragg with a cheeky grin. She did one song called 'Black Tie' which reduced some people to tears, despite her warning over a rhyme* in the chorus. The song is about an imaginary trip back in time to speak to her teenage self and explain that everything is going to be fine, and that is isn't her who is the problem.
*"Those images that fucked ya are just patriarchal structures"

2. Martin Barre, and "50 years of Jethro Tull, featuring three original members". Make that "one original member", Clive Bunker on drums. Martin Barre was brought in after Mick Abrahams AND Tony Iommi. Dee Palmer didn't join until five years after the band was founded. Clive Bunker, however, was an original.

The gig was accompanied by a pretentious pre-recorded narrator with a yank accent, and the screens by the stage played the sort of random old films that OGWT used to show when they didn't have the actual band available. As for the music... There was a second drummer, who really belonged more with Tygers of Pan Tang than Tull, and an Ian Anderson impersonator who didn't play flute, but tried to do all the mannerisms and voice. They were bad enough, but the worst was Barre himself. Now, I am a Tull fan, and a fan of Barre's playing. There is a live recording of 'Locomotive Breath' in which his playing is awesome, and on the same album, his bottom-end soloing and fills on 'Aqualung' are a delight. An entire stage show, however, that consists almost entirely of him wanking over all of his heaviest riffs and solos, one after the other, is not what I want to hear. In the end, I walked out.

It was good to see Dee Palmer on stage, though, smiling, waving, and clearly happily spaced out.

I saw the Sisters of Mercy at the Roundhouse in London last night. I also saw an old friend for the first time in far too long, and his new partner. Seeing them was probably the highlight.
The support were a bit too shouty with their backs to the audience gloom for my tastes. We gave them a song and went out to the bar.
Andrew Eldridge no longer has hair, which was a surprise. The songs included the hits, more from the later albums than the early. Part of me still hopes they might write new songs, but this wasn’t that. However, the mix was terrible, lacking any of the higher end that separates the instruments or lets tunes cut through. It improved after they had a fag break, but never really got beyond mediocre. Which is a shame.

Australian psychedelic oddballs King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard at Ally Pally.  Short notice thing because a chum of Miss von Brandenburg had a spare ticket.  I liked them but my fellow ageing rockers were unconvinced so we left early, on account of my car being parked miles away outside their gaff.

Also King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard @ TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht.
Frenetic.
Good. (Also good acoustics in the venue)
In the middle of some song with a quiet bit, the locals started singing something of their own and it weirded out the front man a bit. (No idea what they were singing but they were in unison, whatever it was.)
The Vomit Comet / Murder of the Universe bit was weird.
Towards the end the front man twiddled on the drums while one of the drummers went crowd surfing.
The keyboard/Bez type had a fiddle about on guitar,
Then the front man went crowd surfing.
I've obv lived a sheltered life but this is the first time I've seen a band crowd surfing.

They didn't play Crumbling Castles, but I think that's cos it wasn't frenzied enough.
Quite entertaining.
Also, they just played for ages and then got off the stage. No pissing about with encores nonsense.
