How do I determine the configuration of my RAM without taking the cover off the box?

This freebee tells you lots about your system.  Hope that helps.

Also, Crucial do an online scan to tell you what is in there.

BIOS will tell you on boot up or you could go into it to check.

You could also try a diagnostic such as SiSoft SANDRA - there's a downloadable 'Lite' version which may have enough detail.

Okay, having a thick moment here - how do I determine my motherboard make?

Belarc wil tell you, and so will the Crucial scan.

If the Crucial scan cannot identify everything you can manually enter make and model and it has info on most manufactured machines out in the big bad world.

...you take the lid off...

Oh.

:blink:blink:  :stare:

Right...   ;D

If you really don't want to open the case, the reboot sequence should show you the GFX card splash screen, then type of motherboard/BIOS, total RAM installed (but not its configuration) and the HDD type and capacity.  Failing that - you may need to get into the BIOS and disable a splash screen - a diagnostic would help.

Der !!  Sorry chaps.  All done.  I used the crucial scan.
I have also purchased 2 x 1GB RAM to upgrade from my 2 x 512k.
Thanks all.

please don't scare me now that I've done this.

Excellent.  Have you any plans for the old ram and if not is it for sale?  I'll need to know the spec of it too though if it is ...

Just feed the modules in through the DVD drive slot.

The machine will do the rest.
It is simpler than it looks.

Easy GruB, I remember what happened last time you posted whilst "flying".   It gave the mods of that site a very difficult weekend  ;)

(Oh, and I still snigger when I remember that VW Beetle image you posted  ;D)
