For a fair few years I have produced gpx point to point routes (ie just marking turns with routepoints or trackpoints - no routing needed by the garmin) by:
Producing a route in cylce-travel or obtaining from somewhere
Then
Importing it into gpsies.com which:
displayed the route on a suitable map - like OSM
showed me the total number of points
had an auto "slimming" mode to cut the points down.
Showed all the points so that I could manually chop out what I didn't need
Allowed me to Fine tune-position all remaining points so that they sat accurately on the road or at turns
No naming/numbering of points needed as I do this later using caret (works offline) on a chromebook.
All worked fine - have ridden over 150 mile rides, often at night, using this system and not a wheel wrong.
But now gpsies.com has become alltrails and the routes it displays don't show all the points for editing.
Anyone know some other online site (hopefully free) that will do what gpsies.com used to do for me?
If I've been less than clear and anyone needs more info before advising, then just fire away.

I tend to do it by uploading the GPX to Komoot, and then using the fairly intuitive editor in there to move it around. Then you can export the finished product as a GPX. I think RidewithGPS also offers the same thing though it isn't free.
Garmin Connect can also do it and it is free, but it is Shaitan's own 'service' and I can't stand using it. It's a mare.

I had the idea that komoot was paid for or part of the purchase for wahoo devices?
Garmin connect I can't really use these days apart from the odd enforced usage when I dig the lumbering windows laptop out - I use chromebooks these days - hence looking for something web based.

Garmin Connect is web based, you might be confusing it with Basecamp??

I've used OpenRunner for years, but nowadays they don't give you a full-screen editor unless you have a paid subscription. You can either import a GPX or create one from scratch. Drawback is that they limit the number of points that you can edit, and imported GPXes usually have too many. OTOH you can show and edit several routes at once, so you can use route A and plot a variant on top of it (maybe not in the free account, I pay).

Ah yes sorry it looks like it's paid for now. I got the all regions package a long time ago when it was substantially cheaper than it is now!

Garmin Connect is web based, you might be confusing it with Basecamp??

But have looked at that link - can you tell me more?
It seems to talk about "installing" something and mentions google play - ie android.

Garmin Connect will work though - as T42 says it's web based. It's what I use with my chromebook, not used a windows device for years now.

Quite nice but not suitable for road cycling: tried doing a route from Budby to Walesby in Nottinghamshire and it routes me down https://goo.gl/maps/5xRWe1UPW5C2Qiju5 and, worse, https://goo.gl/maps/Steh2RRs29cMdA3e7 (arguably not that good even for MTB).
Interesting that mapbox appear to be using OSRM's default cycling profile for their API - but I'm not going to give them any hints as to why it's doing the above. :)

What is the bit that you cannot do with a free RWGPS account?
You can do most of that but possibly not the reducing number of points - I've never needed to do that.

So what do people do with an organiser supplied .gpx file that has WAY too many points to be used on a Garmin (getting on for 1MB in size). I'm a new user of navigation devices and my solution was to re-create the route myself in mapmyride and download it. Hopefully it will work but I'll have the routesheet on my bars anyway! I realise that you can pay for a subscription to reduce the number of points.

For the purist, notepad is the only way to truly appreciate a gpx file.
I whipped up my own windows software for viewing gpx files on o/s maps. It has the facility to resample. Send me a message and I will happily send you a copy (but it is windows only).
Edit: actually read the OP properly and see it needs to be web based.
