A local expert tells me that Stornoway has 2 runways making a cross shape. So they can change runway to suit wind direction.

We have definitely flown to Benbecula when the ferries have been cancelled! We flew out in the middle of the first named storm (Abigail) and flew back to Glasgow in the second one (Barney).

Like almost all of the 700+ airfields built in WW2, Stornoway was provided with three runways in an ‘A’’ shape, one main runway of 6000’ length, and two secondary runways of around 4200’ length. Like almost all of the few that remain in use, at least one of those runways is now disused as wind variations didn’t justify its maintenance. Most only retained the main runway, and a few (Speke, Turnhouse) abandoned all three and built a new one!

This morning's shower was the first this year in which the water was heated only by the sun, to a lovely >40°C.

I have some shading wash to paint on the greenhouse. It says "do not apply if rain expected within 12 hours". So that would be no sooner than the 7th of April at the moment according to the Met Office. That's as far as their detailed forecast goes but the long range says no change before mid April

The UK experienced 27% more rainfall than an average March, with much of this concentrated in the south. A number of counties saw at least double the amount of rainfall they would expect for the month, including Cornwall, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire.

In March 2023, I recorded 90.7mm here in Sanny Saarfend, which is much wetter than normal. In March 2024, the figure was 56.8mm, a little above normal. That seems to be very much in keeping with the info on that map.

That map suggests that March 2024 rainfall in Suffolk was pretty much average. I beg to differ!
