Hotblack not eligible for reasons that nobody can remember.....

Something to do with consistant irregular participation (working a late shift 1 week in 3).

I have remembered the actual reason - you gave up your amateur status some years ago when you were the actual BFC.

The committee is strictly for amateurs like me and Oaky  O:-)

I'm allowed to drive the car from next Tuesday so I may pop down to the Swan to join you next week. Between driving and Med I'll be on the Guinness Clear but getting out is a start!

Just following you posts    ;D

Swan at Totham next week.  We will need to sound them out in case any other groups of cyclists also want to attend coincidentally on the same night at the same time.

We both know Mr Diggler was just being modest when he was speaking to Bobb, the truth is only what we make it.

Next week... I would be up for a more "ted friendly" location, any thoughts?  That's the beauty of living in Shitham, we're right in the middle of Mid-Essex so any point of the compass works for us

Swanning Around

The first EER meeting of the year is always a prestigious event with a guest list to match.  There are no wild westerners either so no Cletus from the Compasses to lead us astray with African spirits.

The venues are also closer to home for us easterners - there is only so far east you can go from Witham before you get wet.

For once I miscalculated the distance in my favour so I managed to arrive early.  I immediately formed a cunning plan to intercept the famous Witham Peloton on Loamy Hill Road.  I had almost struggled to the top of the incline when I saw what looked like a Pink Floyd stage set approaching and managed to jump on the back of their tight formation.  The cunning part was they were travelling down hill at that point so my additional ballast gave me the momentum to be able to keep up with them all the way to the pub - apart from my lack of practise with their choreographed moves, it was almost like living the dream for that brief few hundred yards.

We were soon settled into our seats with Huggy bagging the warmest seat, me following his lead to the second warmest with Hotblack and the Hustler protecting us from any drafts.  We were quickly joined by Stig of the Dump fresh from frightening schoolchildren and promising to leave any minute - a promise he repeated several times over the next 3 hours.

The Swan at Totham had the same marquee set up as for our last visit in October.  With their roof heaters and creatively camouflaged wall openings it was a cosy enough venue - even for the Cone Killer who had brought along his warm weather kit of a Benny from Crossroads hat, a pair of garage forecourt plastic gloves and a tub of vaseline.  He also arrived with a label round his neck from Jem (stricken with CBA) imploring us to look after him and make sure he got all the way home (as if we would leave him in the lurch).

The prestige of the evening even drew out the Bionic Kiwi - aka Tippers v2.0 who looked remarkably healthy for somebody who has not really been allowed to drink much for a couple of months.

The Cone Killer was at another table where he entertained a bloke with a wind tunnel engineered aerodynamic beard and Captain Ian Elliott who had tales of radar woe.

We discussed Huggy's plan to reverse engineer a cutting edge titanium bike into a Draisine - certainly an ambitious plan but no one was quite sure why.

There was an understandably limited selection of Brewers Gold and Essex Boys available to sample.  We were fortunate to have the full committee available as well as our office junior so we forgot to convene but, judging by the amount of samples consumed, Essex Boys was the clear Quaffers' Choice.

Table service has much to commend it, not only for the Hustler who gets another night on furlough but for all of us who are able to watch a true professional work.  Our charming server was even good enough to warn us that the lights switched off at 11 sharp before she set off home.  That, we felt, was probably a hint to leave but we waited until 11 just so we could stumble about in the dark a bit.

It was one of those evenings that was so blustery that it was never entirely clear where the wind was coming from.  The way there should have benefited from a stonking tailwind with the reverse on the way home. We could hear the wind building as the night wore on so I was becoming increasingly worried about either a. having to keep up with Carlos into a headwind or b. explaining to Jem why I had abandoned him to another mechanical.  In fact, despite its strength, the wind seemed to have very little positive or negative effect in either direction of travel.  I was also able to keep up with the great man because we set off at a pace that Huggy will soon be familiar with on his Draisine.  Inevitably, Carlos tired of this eventually and zoomed off into the night with a cheery wave.  With only a 12 mile journey home, I was not alone for long and even managed to beat the street lights.

On a different note and with a bit of the usual thread drift, Huggy was wiping away a tear last night as he remembered the joys of cycling around Holland with ACME and realising it might not happen for a while.

That seemed like a good opportunity to suggest my alternative plan for an ACME day out (or micro bikepacking adventure if you are trying to annoy Bobb  :demon:) based around the Peddars Way:

Train from Colchester 0540 arrives Kings Lynn 0835  (there is a Bishops Stortford option leaving at 0646 and connecting with the same train to also arrive 0835)

Quick breakfast then pedal to the start of the Peddars Way near Hunstaton

Lunch at Castle Acre - approx 50k

Divert from Peddars Way just north of Thetford to hoon through Thetford Forest and then Kings Forest.

Drinks, dinner and debrief in Culford or BSE.

Hourly trains from BSE to Colchester or Bishops Stortford.

About 125k mainly off road https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35840374

Not so sure about Sunday schedules but weekdays or Saturdays work for me.

Anyone ?

It's got promise if I can rid myself of inability to ride far without discomfort.

0540 from Colchesterol is a bit of a challenge though!

Yes, that's right up my street ... especially the start from Bishop's Stortford

Unless it is before the end of next week, a weekday will be a challenge for me. Saturday's are mostly good, except when there is one of those Audax's going on.

I should probably make the effort to attend the AUK AGM on the 15th (as should you all) but the 22nd has potential.

We will also be able to form a larger group that day if the next lockdown easing happens on the 17th.

Charlie don't ski

EER is currently reprising its infamous Tier 2 Tour.  Last night was our penultimate outing which could only mean the Alma at Copford (not the one with the hands on barstaff).

I arrived (on time again  :o) just as the Witham Peloton swept into the car park and dismounted in perfect unison - the effect was rather spoilt by Hotblack's subsequent attempts to fit his huge bike under the bike rack, they really are a far more impressive sight awheel.  Huggy and the Hustler made up the rest of their flying wedge.  We were soon joined by Jemango to make up our allotted six.  Later, an adjoining table formed when Tom Jones's young nephew arrived and, later still, Cletus from the Compasses turned up in his pick up truck, banjo in hand.

The Quaffers' Choice Committee is clearly the pre-eminent group associated with MEMWNS and membership is highly-prized.  Nevertheless, it is but one of the many affiliated interest groups that come under the MEMWNS umbrella.  I really cannot begin to tell you how many fascinating hours we have spent spellbound as the engineering sub-group recount their hilarious tales of the day the defenestration widget failed on the possum mast because Sid had miscalculated the number of MGHZ needed for the oscillating strip drive.  Last night we were entertained by the film appreciation society.  Like the QCC it is only open to amateurs so the Hustler is obviously ineligible.  Their discussions seem to involve a mixture of poor impersonations and in depth analysis of what Hotblack refers to as the whooominn condition.  The Hustler's guest spot thankfully steered clear of his own illustrious career, concentrating instead on east London's contribution to the Vietnam War oeuvre.

Then it was over to the entertainment sub-committee with Huggy sitting in for OD, the absent chair.  It seems that Cletus is in fact a deeply spirtitual guy.  He is particularly taken with the proto-druidic tradition and was able to tell us all about how he and his followers celebrate the three spirit nights.  Whilst Beltaine and Samhain are no doubt fascinating evenings chez Cletus, Huggy was more interested in Alban Hefin as a possible alternative to our cancelled Epiphany extravaganza.  Matters momentarily took a darker turn when a group of agitators, led by Jem, tried to hijack the meeting and force through a motion that we hold a Wicker Man festival instead with Fandango as Lord Summersisle and a human sacrifice (actually, having voted on a candidate, we may keep that bit).  Fortunately Cletus's descriptions of fire leaping, skipping through the embers in conga lines and general spiritual merriment won them over.  Now all we need is the final easing of lockdown which, spookily or purposefully, is due on the very day itself.

Having something as elitist as the QCC is one thing but when a group sets out to divide themselves by matters other than merit, you have a problem.  The Titanium Circle, as they are calling themselves, is one such group.  Huggy has just been admitted as an associate member but he may have misunderstood the bit about "ownership of a traditional titanium bicycle".  The rest of us think it is a worrying trend.

The sampling selection was limited once more with (possibly but no one bothered to check) Timothy Taylor's Landlord and (again, possibly) Greene King IPA.  The possibly Landlord was the clear winner, guest judge Dai Jones expertly describing it as "a bit citrusy, are you sure this is the same one as before".

Limited as the ale choice may have been, there was no lack of hospitality from the venue itself.  We were escorted to a cracking table, tucked away in a warm corner of the marquee and with an electric heater pointing straight down onto it (Cletus looked like a man discovering fire for the first time when he saw the heater).

Sadly it was far less tropical on the way home with the Garmin hovering around 1-2 degrees.  Fandango and I kept ourselves warm by showing off our ace bike-handling skills and practising our synchronised huffing and puffing show.  I have no idea if he took the correct route home this week but he seemed to make it.  I enjoyed another clear and quiet ride home.

Next week is the final part of our Tier 2 Tour which means the one and only Oddie.
