"Good bicycle ride with the local club today.  Smashing picnic at a public hanging. Also saw two impressive workhouses and a couple of fallen women begging along the way."

(Disclaimer: I am a Hardy fan, although there are at least two stinkers among his less-read novels).

Not a caption: Our English master at school didn't like him much. When he was force-feeding us Woodlanders and we came to one dense passage about 2/3 page long he said "the next bit's just another of his long, boring descriptions so we'll skip it". Cue a couple of scandalised exclamations from the girls' side of the class and sighs of relief from the blokes.

The Woodlanders isn't his best.  John South was a fine invention though, with his obsession over a tree.

I remember reading it for O Level. I can't remember what it's about and it certainly didn't make me a fan of Hardy, though I have read some since.
