Hengistbury to Christchurch, ride to:
Lymington to Yarmouth (IoW) ride across IoW via:
Cowes chainling (IoW)
Ryde (IoW) to Portsmouth

Great idea! I looked through my pics, thinking of the ferry journeys I've done:
1) Woolwich ferry - lots, including numerous 'Thames Path Meanders'. I have no pics.
2) Portsmouth - Le Havre - Portsmouth. Pics taken on the ferry, no bikes in evidence.
2) Quillebeuf-sur-Seine. Pic of approaching ferry, none with bikes.
3) Portmouth - Hayling Island. No pics.
4) Somewhere in Norfolk on the Asparagus & Strawberries 400. No pics.

Ta.
I was slack in not making that comment. In my defense, this was on the infamous 2008 perm ridden with Charlotte, Julian and the Organiser. There was a distinct lack of humour on that event.

I live quite landlocked. Still half a dozen ferries within a circle of 100km (good for an out-and-back DIY), a few dozen if you take a circle of 200km (DIY, returning by train). All of them crossing rivers like this one (no bike on the photo but I just crossed that river during a DIY 200):

Anyhow, back to ferries and bikes, both of which I love.
The Bawdsey to Flexistowe Ferry, the bike is Tina the Tandem. We rode with Pixieannie of this parish. The ferry was small, expensive and the ferryman grumpy ...

Yeah, last time we went with Andrij, we were led down to the lower deck. I'm sure the first time I went on the main deck. Having said that there was only one in operation and it was heaving, so I can understand that they'd want to keep the top car-only.

What were we thinking?
We'd have been on that ride had Polly not been recovering from a knee operation (She's still recovering  she's recovering :( it's taking so long) especially had we known there was another tandem just like ours.
We bought it as a first tandem, but it's done us well, we've been to the south of France three times on it. Narrow tyres have helped a lot - and replacing bits like the steel handlebars with alloy have helped to reduce the weight. It only weighs around 45 lbs, with pedals, but perhaps that's because it's small - the seat tubes are 15" and 12", we're both short.

With apologies to Crinkly Lion and her bridge thing, splendid though it is...for me a ferry trip should be incorporated into any bike ride, if at all possible... I'm so glad to have found this thread
Happily there are several within East Anglia, as well as to the wider world and Kent.
Earlier this year: Here's Sprog#2 and his Orbit Mercury, waiting for the approaching landing-craft style ferry from East Mersea to Brightlingsea. Later that day we met various forum-ers and watched the Halfords Tour Series criterium in Colchester.

I was the only bike on, and it actually took me a while to spot that the strange rack area was a bike rack at all (nobody told me what to do other than "go to the far end" :) Once I'd realised what it was and puzzled out how to use it, I was quite impressed with the rack concept. (Not sure how well it would cope with less standard handlebars though...)
-
That's me forwarned for Friday :)

We were unable to use it with our loaded flat bar tourers. It was a bit of a nightmare but we managed in the end to get a separate spot at one end to the side next to a shabby desk and a rolling office chair!

Ah, Decathlon (the Wednesbury store, at least) have something similar. With seriously heavy duty steel cable loops hanging down for you to lock to your back wheel. It works pretty well, if you've got the right kind of handlebars (though I'm struggling to think of a DF bike that wouldn't fit - some folders might be problematic I suppose) and they aren't cluttered with brackets or have the brake levers in the wrong place.
Clever, but not as clever as the good old Sheffield stand.
-
I guess taking bikes on ferries has become more popular in recent years. Up until a few years ago, you just leant your bike up against the side next to all the cars....
-
(http://212.159.115.167/travelog/2010-06-IOM/pict0096.jpg)
My only pic of bikes on [in] ferry - me old china James and my two folders on the Liverpool to Isle of Man ferry. A few years previous the 23c front wheel of my roadie slipped into a drainage slot on the exit ramp of said ferry, and catapulted me full somersault. Apparently the small print says that you are responsible for safety when disembarking. So I got to buy a new front wheel and nurse a head / leg wound for a few weeks.
-
Clever, but not as clever as the good old Sheffield stand.
The one on the ferry felt like the bike would be more stable against pitching and rolling than if it had just been leant up against a Sheffield stand. I guess you could lash the bike to a Sheffield stand, but unless the bike was tight against it there would still be the possibility of it knocking against the stand in high seas.
-
Depends on the shape of the bike, innit.
I'd rather lash a loaded tourer or 'bent (or loaded 'bent tourer) to a Sheffield stand than fail to attach it securely to one of those. It's the most universal bike-securing solution.
It wouldn't be unreasonable for a bike stand on a ferry to have a bit of pipe lagging on it, anyway.

On Dover-Calais ferry last Friday morning at 0330, for attempt at London to Paris in 24 hours.
I packed at 60 miles on the French side and got the train from Abbeville (160 miles total) . Projected a complete bonk in the impending 130 miles, based on my lack of riding in the preceding 2 weeks (sailing). Still, weather and countryside was great, and the night ride from London was excellent - balmy temperature. It was my co-riders' first experience of night riding - they appreciated my "lights for seeing".....
Definitely on for trying again, but with more recent miles in my legs.

Chris, our paths seem fated to keep crossing (little ferry joke, there)! As you know, I'm from the North-East, though not quite as far north as L., but one of my many brothers has lived in Woodbridge for many years. He is a bell-ringer at Bawdsey church and I went there with him in January. However, what is probably more interesting is that my wife's step-father, who was a radar operative in the RAF, was stationed at RAF Bawdsey towards the end of the war, prior to going over to Germany after D-Day. He used to speak of pub-crawls in Felixstowe and desperate attempts to catch the Bawdsey Ferry back to base. It was apparently closed to civilians. What he didn't speak about was this:-
In 1944 a mock commando raid was staged at Bawdsey. RAF Bawdsey was warned of the attack and told of the approximate expected time of the attack. In the small hours the sentries on lookout saw a flotilla of rubber dinghies approaching the shore. The sentries had not been warned to expect a mock attack by friendly forces and so assumed it was the Germans. Bawdsey was prepared for an attack by sea and defences were in place. These consisted of drums of petrol which were anchored to the sea bed and which could be ruptured by explosive charges detonated from the shore. There were also machine gun positions along the cliffs. Once the oncoming dinghies were close to the shore the defenders detonated the drums of petrol which were then ignited by tracer fire from the machine guns. The invaders were incinerated . The question is who failed to warn the sentries of the impending attack. The event has been and still is covered by a `D Notice. (from Wiki.
Presumably the D-notice meant he couldn't, even if he'd wanted to.
Liked the shirt - is that from some event or other.......?

I just noticed this thread.

One of my favourite rides in Stockholm is to head out through Ekerö up to the lovely island of Adelsö where I've got a great 16km virtually traffic free loop of fantastic scenery. Involves a short, free chain ferry ride.

On 0500 ferry to the Isle Of Wight Randonnee. I'd decided to do it twice, so needed to get an early ferry in order to be back for the celebratory meal in the evening. Hence 0315 wake-up, 40 minute cycle to ferryport...
Strangely, there were only about 10 of us on the ferry. Including some very scantily clad young ladies returning from a night out in Portsmouth. According to the ferry chap in the on-board shop "you should have been on the 0300....!"
Got round - 227km - in 10 hours. Bonked a bit 2nd time up Military road...

(Types while very unwelcome Chris de Burgh earworm is on continuous loop in my head...)
I'm sure we weren't the first, nor the last to do this one. Sadly no pictures, as it was far too long ago and any pics are long since lost.
We called it the Betty Swollocks Memorial Ride (but I don't think the majority got it. Ho hum).
Meet at Portsmouth Harbour Station. Take the Gosport ferry to... Gosport.
Ride Gosport to Warsash
Warsash to Hamble ferry
Ride Hamble to Southampton.
So'ton Town Quay to Hythe ferry
Ride Hythe to Lymington across the New Forest
Lymington to Yarmouth IoW ferry
Ride Yarmouth to W.Cowes.
Cowes river chain ferry, also known as the Floating Bridge across the Medina
Ride E.Cowes to Ryde
Ryde to Portsmouth ferry
Six ferries in one day. Or to ring the changes, you can come back from Ryde on the hovercraft but they only take 2 bikes per crossing.
For the next year we were going to ramp up the milage by meeting on Southsea seafront, ride east to the Hayling Island ferry (as seen elsewhere on this thread), ride the length of Hayling to Langstone bridge, turn west to get back onto Portsea Island and down to the Harbour Station, thus adding about 15 miles and another ferry. But it never happened. Either version is a highly recommended day ride.
Mrs653 and I did the Betty on the tandem. The other machinery was, er, eclectic.

Has anyone got a good photo of one of the Stena cycle racks well filled with bikes please? I would like one for a presentation I am doing on cycle touring around the Netherlands. We went over at August Bank Holiday and not only were the racks both ends completely full, but they had created extra cycle parking too by lashing down some of those crowd barriers in the motorcycle area. Of course I forgot to take a photo hence my posting now.
Thanks

And while I am at it, I am loving my new Stainless bike with 28's. It's a lot more comfortable over the distance.

We've bagged quite a few of the Scottish ferries, but they had nothing on this Dutch one between two of the Friesian islands. Cyclists only for this crossing.
(http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae1/brevet525/vlieland%20ferry_zpsiqc7orxv.jpg) (http://s952.photobucket.com/user/brevet525/media/vlieland%20ferry_zpsiqc7orxv.jpg.html)
At the time I wondered why they were tying all the bikes onto the railing but it soon became very clear.
Second scariest ferry journey ever. I was only able to not panic by thinking that surely Netherlands is the kind of country that wouldn't allow anything too dangerous but I was very glad to see dry land again.

There are some major currents in the Waddenzee. I once sailed through there doing 6 knots through the water, but going backwards.

As it says-wee ferry (2 cars at most) from Cromarty at the tip of the Black Isle over to Nigg , site of a major rig construction and repair yard that looks like its working at about 10% of it's full capacity.
Several rigs moored in Cromarty Firth /Nigg Bay, either waiting for repairs or just redundant.
Not cheap at £5.50 a trip, but it makes a fine circuit from where we were staying last week at Rosemarkie, round by Invergordon,Alness and Dingwall .

re: Harwich to Felixstowe ferry
Well I never! We lived in Bury St Edmunds from 2015 to 2010 and visited Felixstowe on many occasion. We loved the fort (as we has English Heritage membership) the beach and the town... and the market!
We visited the north and the pedestrian ferry but did not know that there was a Harwich ferry! I would have loved to have crossed and visited... :(

First cycle trip off GB, and also did a Krimpen crossing :) This be us aboard the waterbus.
It was a little confusing as the signboard didn't mention our preferred destination, and more than one boat used the stop! We met some helpful travellers though, and one was going to the same stop ;D

Round these parts it can be a challenge to find a decent bike ride that doesn't involve a ferry. Getting north of the Noordsee kanal I have an option of 4 different ferries, or a tiny path across the top of a lock gate. I tend to take a ferry.
However, these 2 photos are of a different trip, the first was the most expensive Dutch Ferry I've used from Vlissingen across the almost Belgium.
Then this next ferry was a surprise. Hadn't realised it was on the route, Annoyingly it only runs every 30 mins, so the guy running it just sits there staring at you across the river for 25 mins until finally coming to get you. Most annoying.
Somewhere in Belgium:
No photo of the bike on this ferry, but I ended up taking it after the bridge up stream was closed for construction work, and the ferry that replaces it stopped running at 2000... Had to wait for the captain to finish fishing before he decided to come collect me.

what's the ferry/luggage ettiket when touring?
Leave it? Remove it? Remove valuables? I'm guessing no different from the concept of leaving a laptop in view in the back of a car?
All my valuables and electronica will be in separate drybags inside the main pannier, so easily removable

I think it's OK to leave luggage on your bike, I think its quite safe as I think the car deck is locked whilst the ferry is underway, although obviously other passengers are milling around during the embarking / embarkation process. But, if you can carry your luggage easily then take it with you when you go upstairs.

What about security on cross-channel ferries? There seem to be occasional tales of cycle tourists having their panniers searched and camping equipment – gas cannisters, swiss army knives – being confiscated. But possibly this is just people being alarmist.
-
There are a couple of threads on the CTC forums about over-zealous checks and confiscation of penknives etc. - it seems Portsmouth has a particular allotment of jobsworths (but that is obviously anecdotal). Most ferry T&C's prohibit you from having knives and gas canisters in the passenger areas, so if you're carrying your panniers up to your cabin you're probably technically in breach, but it's not like anyone will ever check.
On the Harwich-Hook ferry last month there weren't any routine checks, and most cyclists took their bags up to the cabin with them, but a couple of the fully loaded tourers left some on the bike (I presume they just grabbed valuables and clothes/toiletries). That was an overnight sailing, mind - for a daytime one I'd have thought there'd be more left on the bike.
-
I'm doing three hops on Calmac, nothing longer than 2 hours so removing luggage entirely would be somewhat faffy
Hopefully no customs checks O:-)
-
My pannier arrangement is such that the front panniers contain valuables, tools, quick-access clothing, and all the food stuff. Which covers most of what I'm likely to want access to during a shorter ferry crossing, and (with the exception of fuel bottle mounted on the bike[1]) anything security are likely to be interested in.
The big panniers with tent, sleeping bag/mat, spare clothing, wash things, etc. stay on the bike. Unless it's an overnight sailing where I'd go to the effort to bring all four to the cabin so I have access to the extra clothes and wash things. I'll also not bother removing pump, lights, etc.
Security (looked like army types, rather than customs) were actively searching vehicles when I went through Dunkirk a couple of years ago. They complimented my usual bike and waved me through. I think they're more interested in hidden humans than penknives etc.
[1] Seems likely that if a sniffer dog is going to get interested in something, it's going to be this, and having it exposed saves having your panniers explored. Not sure what the actual rules on alcohol/paraffin/LPG/etc are, but I expect the law of unusualness means that half a litre of meths is an explosion risk that will kill everyone utterly to DETH, but petrol-fuelled vehicles with hot engines and active electrical systems are completely harmless.

Last time I checked you were allowed up to 0.5litre meths in a proper bottle on the car deck (I checked before travelling) with ferry company after looking up international marine rules which seemed to indicate that.... Was accepted on the ro ro ferry to York Rally.

Had a short pootle around yesterday to pick up some more tiles for veloviewer, and in so doing, used a self operated ferry.

Wasn't alone on the ferry, a couple of locals got very confused with how it operated and we got the chain knotted up in the middle of the river, blocking other boats. Had to fix it to get us moving again.

If it's a "major" unit, Argyle, Bute, the Loch Nevis or Loch Portain then the car deck is locked while at sea; I tend to keep anything I'll want while on board in my bar bag anyway so shove the shoulder strap on it and crack on for the mariners.
If it's any other double ended landing craft then you're allowed to stay with the vehicle (anything scheduled for under an hour apparently) all you can do on them is sit in one of the passenger "lounges" or go up on top of it though so once you've crossed the pursers hand with gold that's you done.
If it's still raining later I'll dig out some photos

Not so much "of my bike and a ferry" as them sidling into the edge of the picture, but, here they are on the Exemouth - Starcross ferry in the summer.

What's more, the two of you appear to have identical taste in rear racks (bar colour)! Enjoy Ukraine.

"He" could be a "she"!
-
He could be a she, but I'm guessing not based on the geometry of the bike. I've been keeping an eye out for any telltale tan lines or bike brands among the truckers at lunch aboard, but haven't seen any. I certainly haven't seen any 6' when though, so am working on the assumption that he is a he.
Whoever s/he is, his/her taste in rear racks is indeed impeccable.

Intriguing! I'm hoping there's a element of romance in this situation, the story could make an excellent blockbuster, "Sleepless on the Black Sea"! Who would you like to play you?

That's going to work well for the blockbuster: camera pans along the floor and stops when it finds a pair of cycling shoes, battered and dusty from many miles hammering across a 'stan. The camera pans up to reveal that person of Karla's dreams, romance blossoms, the rest is history... ;D

It turns out he is indeed a he and is indeed 6', but he's French and he bought the bike in Thailand. I'll award myself a C on the Sherlock scale.

Again, couldn't get my bike in, as queuing on narrow walkway, but the 'Fridays' used the Kings Lynn ferry across the tidal Great Ouse, at the end of last night's ride.

Just came across the thread this evening. I have a few. Here's one from a ride along the North Sea Cycle Route I did with a few mates back in 08/14. We're got the ferry from near Brielle and were heading to the Hook of Holland at the time. Happy daze.

I have a vague feeling I recognise the bloke in orange behind "Rich XAB with the Dulwich shirt on" in the second photo. Looks like a guy I know (notp) called Andy. Might just be coincidence though.

That bicycle (Surly LHT) is well ferried now. On that trip, it also went on a river shuttle down the Whanganui River and the North/South Island crossing Wellington to Picton. Closer to home, Lymington to Yarmouth, Portsmouth to Cherbourg and Caen to Portsmouth. Proper sea legs.
