Title: Three Bromptons, a Moulton and a Bickerton - 200 km from Northallerton, 03/05/21
Post by: Deano on 02 December, 2020, 08:48:01 pm
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50673252431_1b99413ce8_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2kcPEw4)

(Look, I tried to get a start in Brompton, but Northallerton will do, and it's conveniently opposite the station).

A mainly flat 200 visiting all the Bromptons in North Yorkshire, plus Moulton and Bickerton (and optional Helios). All bikes welcome. I'm not sure I'd recommend bringing your Bickerton, though they've presumably improved since the one I had a go on a few years back.

Entries here (https://audax.uk/event-details?eventId=8831), and the route is here (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34090694) if you want to have a skeg.

Amended start date - now running on Mayday, Monday 3rd May 2021

It was a ridiculous notion that germinated until I decided it had to be a thing :)

Judging by the entries on the first day, it's proving popular, but that may be more to do with the lack of hills than the likelihood of a massed rally of Brommies and Moultons (but I can hope).

Now I have a brompton, a moulton and had a bickerton, I should be in this but 200km by me in 4 months time....HA HA HA.

But cheap train tickets can be sorted and cheap be a laugh.

Not a member of audax and would not want to interfere with any audaxers.

Two Bromptons and two Moultons in this house. A long way to start a 200 but tempting.

Find a Moulton Tandem and I'm in.

Seriously- we could put you up here if the world is closer to normal by then.

I can confirm that I will NOT be riding it on my Brompton! I'll probably decide a couple of days before whether it'll be fixed or gears, but end of March is erring more towards fixed normally.  :-)

Deano, if you need any of the York end of the route checking, feel free to drop me a PM.

It's all bait, except for my brevet unpopulaire, that's a ridiculous thing and will be happening on the same day for anyone daft enough to enter.

Cheers D, I need to decide on my route through York and check the access points for the Bridge of Dreams and make sure the cafes on Bishy Road are still there. I'll let you know if I do need someone to take a look.

If anyone gets an info question about which cyclist has a signed, dedicated photo in the Pig & Pastry, the answer is Lance Armstrong.

Sorry folks, it's full. I'm keeping the field relatively small (40) on the assumption that current restrictions will still be broadly the same come March.

A Ted of Moult-ons, Shirley?  Or perhaps a feather of ..., for those of us who have been to Tan Hill, as Ted famously did.  Little window  on the past, there.

:)

Somewhere, I've got a photo of the appeal they put up at Tan Hill after the windowframe with the feather and the signed pic of Ted Moulton had been nicked.

Aha, found it! I don't think it was ever returned, they suspected a New Year's party which got out of hand.

Makes me wonder if anyone has ever "Everested" any of the routes to Tan Hill.  West Stonesdale from Keld would be a challenge, as would the ride from Reeth - not that I'm actually a fan of the genre - a bit too Strava for my  taste!  But the Moult connection with Everest must make Tan Hill a magnet for some obsessive.  Trouble is, anyone old enough to know will probably die!

Now there’s an idea - West Stonesdale

I don't think I'll be Everesting anything any time soon, but I did read that you need a reasonable gradient. My recollection of Arkengarthdale is that it's a bit long and gentle, and you could be there a very long time. Not sure about Stonesdale, which is definitely more challenging. The Stainmore side is still on my bucket list.

You're right, from Arkengarthdale you'd need to do 406 km in 45 ascents from Great Punchard Gill, which is the bridge just north of Whaw.  Stonesdale would see you do 268 km in 45 ascents from the River Swale; that's a pretty good distance for Everesting, not many people do significantly less than that.  From Stainmore you'd do 311 km in 28 ascents from the River Belah, so a bit longer but not tragic.

There might be a few dropouts, but I doubt I'll re-open entries. Might have to run it again in 2022!

Look forward to seeing Dean and anyone else heading out to Northallerton on Monday - forecast 'interesting' enough that I've pulled the winter tights out.

Nervously under-prepared and expecting to take it slowly.

I’m at 0815 and my ‘guard’ bike is currently sans chainset. I will probably add some clip on guards to a road bike. Looks like naked is unlikely to be the right answer.

That was hard but good - now I’ve warmed up at any rate!

First couple of hours were lovely - sun and only a gentle headwind. Weather closed at Sherburn Coop, then became wetter and windier from York on. Not too bad when it was behind us. But the last 10 or 15 miles southwards back to Northallerton it was relentless.

A good day out, brilliant route and organisation - thanks Deano and team!

My pace was much better than expected till I got to the private school at Cundall. Then my knee started complaining. I eased back a bit but it didn't shut up. I decided discretion was the better form and all that, and decided to bail. I was so annoyed at the 'waste' of the day I went bimbling square bagging instead, so I got all the weather, and the hike a bike walking was at least as bad for the knee as cycling so I might as well have ridden the whole lot.

O, and the icing on the cake? The velcro on the trunk bag ate my shorts. I was so cold & wet I didn't notice I had bare flesh exposed on my upper thigh.

I'm sure the weather would have been better if you'd all ridden Bromptons, Moultons and Bickertons.

Oh, and a small correction to the above - it was one Brompton and one Moulton. No Bickertons, but there's always another year.

In the end I had 22 riders on the day and 21 (slightly damp) finishers. Thanks to all the helpers, of course, and those who did start, though the day did get a bit grim so I can't really blame anyone for staying in bed.

There's a bit of leftover cash which I'm going to bung at my local food bank. And leftover cake which I'll have to distribute round the neighbours.
