One is the correct answer!  Only one single (and no albums) was released between their being known as Ambrose Slade, and simply Slade.  For no apparent reason, it was billed as The Slade, which is a name the band never used anywhere else.

Sorry!  Responded on my phone while on a station.  Reviewing my post, I see I didn't actually name the single concerned.

ftr, it's Wild Winds Are Blowing (1969)

I believe there was a bit of toing and froing  going on even Tony Iommi played with them for a very short time, I believe he stood in for the chap who left, at least the one I'm thinking of :)

Ooh!  Ooh!  I know the name of the band!

But I don't know the name of the departee.

I did wonder whether it was Iommi you were alluding to, though I think Sabbath came rather later.  Never mind, I'll try to remember the fellow's name... :-\

I think his name was P? Abrahams and the band was Blodwyn Pig, of a blues persuasion, if I remember correctly.

Now Peter has helpfully supplied most of the answer I can reveal it was Mick Abrahams.

Yes, Mr L, I should have remembered "Mick".  When I was at university in Newcastle, I saw him with Jethro Tull and Ten Years After, The Nashville Teens and Peter Bown, all for about ten bob.  A fantastic evening - Alvin Lee was a great player, too.

I'll have a go:-

What simian excess links holly and berry?

I can link a Holly and a Berry quite directly, but not through simian excess... :-\

And now, thinking about it, I had the wrong Berry.  We've got Chuck Berry who recorded Too Much Monkey Business.  I guess that was covered by (and I know I should plump rather than hedge my bets) Buddy Holly or The Hollies.  Given how many more records they released, I'll go for the latter.

Excellent!  I'm guessing you had "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" in mind, initially?

OK, then.

Richie Havens to Gypsy Sun and Rainbows.  What?

Woodstock?

Richie Havens was the first performer @ Woodstock, Mr Hendrix recorded Gypsy Sun and Rainbows @ Ashokan House (the house name I had to google) near Woodstock.

Yes, close enough, though I do suspect Peter had it.

Richie Havens opened Woodstock Music & Art Fair (An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music according to the poster) even before Swami Satchidananda had given the opening address and blessing.

The closing act was billed (and introduced) as The Jimi Hendrix Experience.  However, there had been some contractual issues and changes fo personnel, so Hendrix headed up the set by saying the band name was changed to Gypsy Sun and Rainbows.  For short, he said, this was 'A Band of Gypsys', which is a name he and ex-army colleague Billy Cox had used before.

Hendrix was staying and recording near Woodstock at the time.

Moving on, an obscure one (pop and general knowledge in one :) )

What links a Karl Wilhelm, who later anglicised his name to Charles William, Plante and Metallica?

Karl Wilhelm makes me think of German aristocracy, so, given the Schleswig-Holstein conflation, perhaps Lars Ulrich is a descendant.  Plante?  Haven't a clue.  Only know Lynda La Plante, which, i am guessing, no use whatsoever.
