OK, trying to keep it fairly mainstream…

Where would you find: a former Eurovision winner, a now-disgraced 70s pop star, the now-deceased ex-wife of a latter-day saint (to some) and someone who once claimed his name was Jack? And the sales of what album made it all possible?

Well, I don't know if I'm on the right track or not, but Mike D'Abo claimed his name was Jack, Gary Glitter could be the disgraced pop star. Mick Moody, legendary guitarist from Teesside, played on albums by both of them. Are we looking for a performer who was a Mormon, too, say an Osmond? If so, that's just too "mainstream" for me, I'm glad to say!

Paula Yates and Gary Glitter are correct. I'm now worrying that I may have made a mistake with the man named Jack (although folks are on the right track), so for clarification, we're looking for an original Manfred.

Or is this a link to My Name is Jack which was a Manfred Mann song ? He lived in teh back of a Greta Garbo home. Still trying to get the link with Eurovision though ...

You've got the three names right - and the reference to My name is Jack was purely to give you Paul Jones.

Hmm. There was a US duo called Paul & Paula, who had a hit with 'Hey Paula', but I'm not getting an album out of that, nor do I see a Eurovision winner.

Yes, this is to what I was referring when I mentioned Mike D'Abo; he had replaced Paul Jones by the time "My Name Is Jack" was released.

I've just googled for a list of Eurovision winners. One of them was called Paul, but I don't see a link between him and the rest of the question.

The Eurovision winner was not named Paul. in fact, Paul is not a factor at all (I had forgotten about "Paul Gadd" when I set the question).

Hmm Hughie Green was Paula Yate's father and Mary Hopkins broke through on Opportunity Knocks but she only came second in Eurovison so that doesn't help much.

Oh boy, redlight, you can pick them! Fellow-strugglers, if you don't know the answer to this (I used a few educated guesses via a search engine) then arbitrary knowledge will not do it for you!

Unless I've got it wrong, redlight, it was the creation of the album that made your question possible, rather than the sales of it, I think? Or maybe the real answer is going to make all the above look a bit stupid! This often happens to me.

If, I'm right, I'm relieved it passed me by!

You're almost there, Peter. All four acts (including the former Eurovision winner) appeared, with others, on an album in the 1980s BUT it was the royalties from another album, in which they played no part, that enabled the producers to bring them all together and pursue this and other projects.

Any help?

No, scratch that - it's BEF! Music of Distinction, or whatever. Glitter, Jones & Sandie Shaw all featured, so I guess Paula Yates was on there somewhere.

That means that the album which made it all possible was Heaven 17's Penthouse & Pavement!

Phew! That was a struggle.

BEF is the correct answer to the first part. The second is a little more tenuous…. When Ware and Marsh were ousted from the Human League, their compensation for the loss of use of the name was a small percentage of the royalties from the HL's next (and at that time unrecorded) album…. which turned out to be Dare. They never looked back!

I'll leave you two to slug it out as to who won as Clarion got there first but Pcolbeck got all the tracks.
