Yorkshire Le Tour stages...
« on: 21 November, 2013, 07:30:43 pm »
Have relatives in Harrogate - do you reckon it's worth going up for the Sat & Sun - 1st two stages of TdF.   My guess is that the hill sections will be rammed, and quite difficult to access; finish may be doable.

I notice certain councils are getting their 'knickers in a twist' over the forthcoming cycling apocalypse.

Yes, definitely worth it.

I've got some holiday booked around then and am toying with the idea of living like a hobo for a couple of days in order to camp out on Buttertubs and Holme Moss.  Then again, the York stage does start just outside my house.

Remember, if he gets over Buttertubs then Cav would really like to claim the yellow jersey in front of his mum's house in Harrogate.  That would be something good to watch.

Buttertubs would be good (last cycled by me in 1992!), or other climb.  I can't really see myself going up (4 hour drive) to stand for hours on a level-ish section of the route and watch the peloton flash by.  The finish will be mayhem too, and one would probably still have to wait for hours.  The roads are likely to be scary busy/jammed with cars as well, though I'd take my bike up.

As I think I have previously mentioned, I am going to watch the peleton flash through Ripon (there is a point I know where I should be able to see them approaching and then receding).

On the second day I am going to York (by train)to see the start of the second day (first real day of racing), and taking Mrs T and TLD.

On of the advantages of living only a short distance from York/Leeds/Harrogate etc :)

You don't stand by the side of the road in order to watch the race, you do it in order to be part of the circus. You then go home and watch the race on the telly.

We are planning to stay at my folk's on the edge of the Peak District and get up at early o'clock and head up onto Holme moss. It'll be awesome and I hope they are bringing over a substantial portion of the caravan.

2007 in London seems such a long time ago now, but it was great.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

I'll be 10 km further south at Harewood House for the cycling festival.
Camping there is a little cheaper... :-\

I wondered what sort of luxury you get for your £100 a night

Quote
Car parking
Cold fresh water
Toilets - each field has at least 8 toilets
Washing up - washing up sinks are available in each field (cold water)
Recycling/rubbish facilities - these are available around the site - please try hard to recycle
Ice pack exchange - available on request:- 50p per ice block

So no showers, no hot water.

But you do get car parking. Unfortunately it'll be nowhere near your tent.

The furthest you will need to walk with your camping gear will be approx 200m.

Crikey.  That's not value for money!

I've no objection to farmers using their fields for camping for big events and offering bare bone services (i.e. toilets) - but not at that price.

"Welcome to Yorkshire"!

I love the 50p per ice pack - on top of your £250. Bivvy bag on the moor?

All being well, probably go with Usha Gap cs near Muker. £10/adult  If the weather's good there are worse places to spend a night or two...   :)   Then on Sunday, can catch the race as it goes into Harrogate (again).  I wonder what time the grande depart from Leeds will be, and what time they're likely to get up to Northern Dales area.

Bivvy bag on the moor?

That's my (tentative) plan. There is a nice pub in Holme. Meal there and a few pints the night before, then head on up the moor to crash out, out of sight.

I used to live in Holmfirth. My first house was there. My son was born there. I saw my first (live) hedgehog there.

I'm slightly confused by this article, does it really suggest that Leeds and Harrogate are in the Netherlands?

My club (Otley) is going to be putting on a cycling festival and a bunch of stuff around the event. I know they are doing a social ride for day one (from good viewing spot to good viewing spot), so if anything is bringing a bike up, they can take advantage of local knowledge.

Looks likely that Yorkshire is getting it's own 3 day UCI race from 2015.  Fingers crossed
