Yes indeed. As a randonneur, I'm often out at night in the summer, and it's a highlight of the summer. I've not seen any displays this year :(. I remember watching a fantastic display right across the northern sky, on the way back to Seething last year, 350km into the Seething 600. Sadly this year, there was a cold NE wind off the North Sea, and a low misty Haar.

Can we have man-made clouds?

Seen from the train on the way back form London on Saturday. The black blobs are bits of dirt on the windows.

Stuffing these two in clouds, cos that's where I think they should go! This was on Sunday (20th) when we had a fair amount of misty-fog around our neck of the woods.

Now, before you ask, that green blob is lens flare! On a track at the back of Rottingdean.

Spooky huh? About 10.30am on top of Mt. Harry Hill looking back towards Lewes.

Noctilucent clouds; quite uncommon; and eerie. These were seen in 2009, not seen any this year. 2006 was particularly good for some reason.

Setting sun casts crepuscular rays through a vapour trail into a higher level cloud layer. Sadly, the picture doesn't do the effect justice - the rays were much more pronounced in Real Life.

Deano wins.

Again  ;).

Only because he has some rather spectacular cumulo-granite in his piccy. The fluffy stuff is pretty ordinary. Ish.

Tcha! Really?

I see:

Cumulus Fractus
Virga
Cumulonimbus
Stratocumulus

and a precipitation plume that would have your average pilot thinking "microburst" and asking ATC for some leeway  ;) ;D

I see all of that - well, most of it. This is winter in Turkey. Isolated cold-sector CBs at this latitude at this time of year are relatively benign. Yes, there's virga, but that doesn't suggest microburst in this environment. Might be a bit bumpy, but icing would be far more dangerous than air movement in this cloud!

I may as well do the whole thing, then.

Here's the same cloud a little earlier:

Then getting a bit closer:

And a panorama including the original photo:

I didn't get wet, but it was bloody cold.
Title: Re: Clouds
Post by: TimC on 17 September, 2013, 10:32:46 pm
Was it windy approaching the mountains? A tailwind, perhaps? If so, this would be an orographically-generated CB. No matter; a cu-nim building in a fairly short time, even in winter, will have quite strong up- and downdrafts. The downdrafts produce the coldness you experienced, along with the precipitation plumes (snow, in this case) Chris referenced. Actually, your second picture in the sequence above tells me far more than the foreboding and atmospheric last image.
Title: Re: Clouds
Post by: Deano on 17 September, 2013, 10:39:16 pm
My diary that day was about four lines - my hands were really numb. But I mentioned a tailwind until I was under the cloud, when it became what felt like a northerly. I was heading east, just about.
Title: Re: Clouds
Post by: TimC on 17 September, 2013, 10:46:00 pm
Yeah, makes sense. There may have been more than one cell in that cloud, but each cell's central updraft is surrounded by a ring of downdraft which spreads radially from the cell on reaching the ground. It meets and combines with the pressure-gradient wind, and may even overcome it - giving exactly the effect you describe. At some later point you'd have had a stronger - and colder - tailwind, assuming you kept going in the same direction.

We rode under a line squall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squall_line) late one evening at the beginning of the month, when it was almost dark. Impressive: dead calm with moon & stars one minute, and the next we were slammed by high wind and torrential rain. Then out the other side and back to the calm & clear sky. Couldn't get any pics but here are a few Googled ones (https://www.google.fr/search?q=line+squall&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=rGM&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=7vj9U_2hD9PiaMyDgYAH&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=1680&bih=924).
