I tried all the plausible letters in that pesky second spot, then just tried implausible ones, with many a 'mot inconnu' until I stumbled on the correct one, and increased my french vocabulary by one.

The multiply and divides are done before the adding and subtracting. It's always been like that when writing formulae and equations. However many calculators perform the operations in the order that they are presented.
