Cambrian Crusade - Night Ride to Barmouth
« on: 02 March, 2009, 06:22:12 pm »
You've done the Dun Run. You've Exodused to Exmouth. Now there's a new through the night challenge for you - the 1st Cambrian Crusade, to be organised on the night of Fri 31st July by the local bike shop in Ironbridge The Bicycle Hub.

We'll start from the historic Iron Bridge to ride through the depths of mid Wales on deserted A roads (avoiding all the hills) for an early morning finish following the coast round round from Machynlleth through Aberdyfi & Tywyn and the finale across the Barmouth Bridge for a bacon butty on the beach.

It will be a fully organised ride with plenty of marshal stations along the way and a rolling sag wagon. There will be an entry fee and the proceeds of this are going to the Severn Hospice, a local charity who are well supported by the Bicycle Hub and its customers.

Watch out for more details on the Bicycle Hub website www.thebicyclehub.co.uk

Is it a sportive or a fun* ride (like the other two you mentioned)?

*if riding through a freezing, often wet night, having stones and beer cans thrown at you in Great Dunmow and paying £10 for breakfast after a 45 minute wait is fun  ;)
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

The idea was to try to stick to the Dun Run / Exmouth Exodus experience. It works so why change it.

There will likely be more in the way of support (a couple of road side feed stops - Wales is pretty thin on 24hr facilities), your breakfast at the finish and a sag wagon, hence there'll be an entry fee unlike aforementioned rides (plus we're trying to raise money for charidee).

Should also be some return transport as Barmouth's not the easiest place to get back from by public transport.

It's Wales so a freezing wet night is not unlikely and I'm sure Newtown can supply some drunken entertainment on a Friday night.

Just checking: There aren't any hills in Wales, are there?  Only, I can do the 'down' bit, it's the 'up' I'd struggle with - if there are, that is.
Getting there...

And my routes are never hilly :demon:

On a more serious note, for once I have devised a route without any hills. Basic outline of the route is...

From Ironbridge B4380 to Atcham then skirt round Shrewsbury on lanes to Pontesbury.
B4499/4386 past Montgomery to Abermule and into Newtown.
B4586 then A470 across to Machynlleth, then A493 round through Aberdyfi & Tywyn.
Finish across the Barmouth Bridge.

A gentle drag out of Newtown but that's about it. Final 30 miles from Mach round the coast are dead flat.

What time does the ride start?

Not entirely decided yet. Probably sometime between 10pm & midnight. The aim is to get to Barmouth for breakfast at 7ish.

Definitely interested in bugg3ring off to Barmouth - will be able to say nearer the time.   It will certainly be a very "flat" ride as befits all things Wesh - anyone tried singing "Men of Harlech" in the key of B?  :-\ ;)
