Will these

TRP Spyre Flat Mount Mechanical Disc Calipers/Rotors

go on my Cyclocross bike? I have a Cotic X drop bar bike which has Shimano Sora R3000 shifters? I know I'll need adapters to make them fit but so long as these are road and not mountain bike compatible, I'd be happy.

Cheers.

if there is meant to be a picture or a link in your post, I can't see it.

The Spyre is for drop bar levers, the Spyke for flat bars.

confusingly this

http://www.trpbrakes.com/userfiles/SPYRE_Final_053113.pdf

makes mention of a 'Spyre MTN' model. I have never actually seen one.

What sort of mounts have you got on your forks and frame?
You can get adapters to use post mount calipers on a flat mount frame. But I don't think its possible to use flat mount calipers on a post mount frame.

Hi,

Thanks for the helpful replies. I'm not up to speed on the current developments in braking technology. I suspect my bike is post mount?? as it is a 2011 model Cotic >X< cyclocross, one of the first manufacturers to produce disc braked cyclocross drop handle bar bikes. The forks are from the same year also.

I didn't know there was a Naming Convention for Road and Mountain Bike framed bikes, this is useful Cudzozmiec, thanks for pointing this out.

Originally the Cotic >X< came with Tectro Lyra disc brakes. I removed them, in favour of Cantis when the Lyra became poor (despite replacing rotors, cables, pads) at braking. I was hoping to replace the Cantis with better disk brake callipers. In the past I bought some second hand BB& callipers but found out that mountain bike callipers (mine) and road bike callipers are not cross compatible.

So do the readers think these 'Flat Mounts, with an adapter, would fit?

Many thanks. Dave C

At the very least you need to answer the question
What sort of mounts have you got on your forks and frame?
If you are not sure of the nomenclature then post photos of both front and rear disc brake mountings, and some kind soul on here will be able to give you the name for them.
Then you can go looking to see if any adapter exists.  You might also need to know the rotor diameter - I'm not well up on these things, but IIRC the caliper position varies according to rotor diameter, and hence subtly different model adapters.

Cheers,

I found a good article on the differences. It looks like I have the older Post Mount type and the newer Flat Mount type won't fit.

Looks like the Cotic X has IS mounts, at least some models did? Looking at the photos here: http://www.cotic.co.uk/product/x
To check, you can measure the distances between the centre of the bolt holes. IS mount is 51mm, post mount is 74mm. Not sure about flat mount, think it is usually 70mm.

You can get adapters to fit post mount calipers on an IS mount frame, or vice versa. Though it may affect the rotor size you can use.

Cheers furan, Cy just got back to me with the same info you have given me, IS brakes.

The great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from. There are lots of IS to Post Mount adapters (and vice versa, see https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brake-spares-disc-adaptors/) and Post Mount to Flat Mount, AFAIK there isn't an IS to Flat Mount.

The mounting surface for Flat Mount needs to be closer to the axle centre than either IS or Post Mount, so an adapter would have to have negative height - it needs to place the Flat Mount calliper in the space occupied by the IS bracket or Post Mount posts.

You can attempt to get around this by swivelling the Flat Mount calliper backwards around the rotor, but the angle needed is such that it would be structurally dubious, look ridiculous and may still be physically impossible.

You can get post mount Spyres, of course.

You could alternatively fit a bigger than standard disc that moves the caliper out enough to leave room for an adapter (theoretically speaking - I'd be surprised if you could go out and buy one).
