Engineering and draughting ephemera

We're in the process of clearing out accumulated tqt from Dad's house.  A Chartered Mechanical Engineer, his early working life was in a drawing office in Sheffield.

Consequently we've turned up misc. boxes of drawing instruments, a slide rule or two and various micrometers. The piece de wossname, however a box containing a gadget for drawing ellipses. It's got a perspex base plate and a swivelly arm with holes for poking a pencil though. He paid thirty seven and six for it.

Tis a thing of wonder, but will only gather dust.

I believe the science museum has a gallery related to technical drawing, some of which is quite modern so they may be interested.

Now that's an excellent suggestion. I shall follow it up.

My late father started out as a mechanical engineer.  We have various technical instruments as well.  Here are a couple of examples of his college work.

I have my Father’s portable set of caliper, set square etc ( he was, among other things, an FIMechE).

It’s great for setting shoe plates up accurately:-)

His lab book from when he was at Birmingham Tech is somewhere too, with neat sketches (and bad handwriting).

My sister unearthed a battered metal case the other day. I guessed immediately what was in it - a home made photographic emlarger.

Not a Spirograph then?

I've got a lot of my dad's tools including a very nice micrometer.  He did have a very good set of drawing instruments, which I was allowed to see and even touch once, hopefully he still has them.  I'm not sure if they dated back to his apprenticeship days, or after when he was a technical instructor in the RAF for a while.

Not ever so like a Spirograph, no.
