Edge 800 USB not recognised
« on: 16 February, 2015, 12:22:17 pm »
Any clues as to why my Edge 800 is no longer being recognised by the pc?

How long did you give it?  - my Edge 200 and Touring both sometimes take a while to be found - pulling the USB plug out and replacing often works

That happened with my etrex 30. I plugged into a different USB socket from the one I usually used, Windows reinstalled the necessary software and it worked OK again  ???

The leads get worn somehow, and that's that.....

 At least in my experience.

I buy the leads both to connect to the laptop, and to charge my 810 on the road, and generally in 'bulk' though each time it's a trawl through a Google search to find a current offer.

Try a new lead

I've recently had mine give up connecting too. No connection no matter what machine or lead I use. It'll still charge though. I think the options are either:
- get a new unit
- record to SD and then take it out and use an adapter and card reader to upload activities and download courses directly from/to the card

Echoing Reg's point, I ALWAYS record to the SD card, and I have at least one adaptor, so can in an emergency connect to a PC that way.

As a side point, I also always put my courses/routes or whatever you call them on the SD card..  that way if my 810 goes wrong, I can whip out the card and put it in my 800 (the spare garmin!!) and bobs your uncle...

... it's a nice thought, but if you put them in the NewFiles folder you'll find, when you move the card to your spare Garmin, that folder is magically empty ...

On my 800 (and I presume the 810 too) files in SD\New files get processed to SD\Courses, and appear in the Courses list prefixed with an SD (from recollection), so I'd expect an SD swap to take any SD-loaded courses with it too.

When I upload files I upload to New Files on both the Garmin and the SD card.  That way, both get updated to Courses and I have ???? on both Garmin and SD.  Duplication I know, but I learnt the hard way after having to do a factory reset when my courses were not uploaded to the SD; early days of learning how best to use a Garmin 800!

I assume swapping SD card to another compatible Garmin would preserve the courses.

I can confirm that, yes, you transfer the course into 'new files' in the SD card directory, (not the internal directory). Then the unit converts it to a fit file, and it stores that new fit file in the SD directory 'courses' folder.

I have done this today, putting a course onto my 810's SD card, which became a fit file on the SD card.  Then I moved the card to my 800, and the course was available on that unit too.

It good news for folks with two Garmins..

(I must admit that I only have an 810 because the existing 800 had a few mid life crises, letting me down unpredictably, and I didn't have confidence in it.. I still carry it, just in case!!)
