A question about painful bowel movements
« on: 26 December, 2015, 02:03:04 am »
So the other day I made some basic pasta, t'was gluten free stuff with some salt, a tin of chopped tomatoes, some tomato puree, basil and chilli. Anyways for some reason it gave me the most incredible stomach aches. Like I was being punched in the gut.

Anyways, since then, everytime I've gone to poo it's been extremely painful, it feels like barbed spikes and very solid.

Any ideas what goings on? What can I do? Feeling very uncomfortable here.

Do you often eat gluten-free pasta? some people don't digest corn starch very well, which is the main ingredient in gf pasta.

I suggest not eating anything for at least half a day, but drink plenty.

Take your time and do not strain!

When I did tai chi, our teacher frequently went on about bowel movements. Whenever I go, I take the i-pad with me and tell Jan "I'm just going for a sudoku!" I find a medium puzzle on http://www.websudoku.com/ takes just the right amount of time. There's also an app if you find yourself in a bog without wifi!

This takes my mind off the matter in hand.

Small factoid: people who die suddenly from heart attacks can have their attack triggered by excessive straining!

But many experiencing a pulmonary embolism experience a sudden call to stool.

Something has upset your system.
A big tomato load gives me the runs.
Wholewheat pasta leaves me extremely gassy and loose of stool.
Runny stools can 'burn' on exit.

I really speak only for myself but suggest you
1) Get something to soothe your tail. You'll find some suitable 'nappy' creams and wipes around.
2) Wait for things to settle.
3) Eat whatever's 'normal' for you.
4) Seek medical advice after a fortnight of persistent trouble.

I drink plenty of water/tea. I don't normally have gluten free stuff but I have had it several times before without issue. And deffo wasn't runny. T'was hard.

Hard suggests insufficient fibre/water.

Fruit, veg and wholewheat products should soften things.

Figs and prunes FTW.

Drink lots of water.

Yeah my fibre count is probably a bit on the non existant side. Fruit intake is very low. But veg and water is very high.

Some veg has surprisingly little fibre in it.
I can't remember the figures but a big pile of red cabbage has much less than a couple of slices of wholemeal bread (or a bowl of All Bran) IIRC.

Chillis are the work of the devil - of course it stings on the way out as well as the way in.
Humans are the only mammals that eat chilli - the rest have more sense!

I've been eating chillis since a kid. It's not the issue, its not just the stinging but more like something barbed is dragging out

Aren't lentils supposed to provide nature'e helping hand along with figs?

No bleeding. And I usually eat a lot of lentils. None in December though.

Is that your problem there? Your body has got used to a certain amount of fibre and now it's been withdrawn.
I eat an orange (plus other fruit) everyday Mon to Fri, not much fruit at weekends. By the time I go back on Monday I notice the difference.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Oats are about 11g fibre/100g. You should be getting about 30g fibre per day.

A porridge made with 50g oats (which is much more than I would have) will only provide a fifth of your recommended daily fibre.

Sorry if my earlier post appeared unsympathetic. It's just that the current obsession with putting chilli in everything is a pet hate of mine - I react very badly to them, and caterers hide them in things like tomato sauces, and especially in veggie dishes, which they seem to think need to be "spiced up"

I have remembered that, many years ago, I developed cracks in the skin around my bum.  Probably more to do with having extremely dry skin than constipation, which I did not suffer from (but it is always the first thing the medics ask, isn't it). Can't quite remember the medical term (anal fissures?), but the effect was as you described - extreme jagged pain on passing faeces, that took a long time to calm down.  It's so long ago, I can't remember what treatment, if any, I received, but it is worth seeing your GP if it doesn't calm down soon.

Sadly I'm one of those people sadly. Love the flavour profiles of chillies not just the heat. That said I've not had anything super hot recently either.

Up your water, then your fibre, and make sure you have some healthy fats/oils every day.
