The really really nice ice cream place on the A30 has reopened after the winter.

Although I couldn't make out the causes in the murky water, there were definite signs of wriggling in the middle of a patch of frogspawn in Priory Park.

Cycling-specific signs of spring: You can ride 80 miles at a relaxed pace and not need lights. In contrast, you do need at least half a bottle of water.

A cuckoo sang briefly last Thursday. A pair of robins are building a nest behind a loose board in one of our fences; it has boards on both sides, so there's a nice nesting site on an arris rail, hopefully out of reach of the neighbours' cats. Must remember not to nail the board back too early ;).

There are lots of wood anemones on the roadside verges & a few bluebells coming into flower on the sunnier hedgebanks. Has anyone else been enjoying the splendours of the blackthorn blossom?

Yes, we have. There have been cowslips out as well.

I saw an adder this morning, the first I've seen for years. Hardly a sign of spring - I'm pretty certain that it is the earliest in the year I've ever seen one.

Observed on our late afternoon stroll today:

First ducklings of the year. 16 _very_ new (fluffy golf-ball stage, mebbe only hatched in the last 2 days) in the care of one female mallard all skittering around like sodium on water.

First swallows of the year.  Two and, unusually, one was perched only 15' or so from us and stayed that way for a minute or two so we got a really good view of it.

Snowdrops in flower in Priory park. I forgot my phone, so no photo. There was no sign of any at all when I was last there last week, but there's a significant clump sprung up and flowering. These must have been up a few days.

Three weeks later than last year.

A patch of road side daffs have been fully out for a week or so.  And the ones by our house that are often out at christmas look like, er, they'll be out at christmas.
