Who or what is AW?

Ann Widdecombe.  At least her 90 seconds on the dance floor gives you a good opportunity to go and make a cup of tea and you can take advantage of the bits when they interview her to do something more interesting or engaging, such as cleaning out the cat litter tray.
Yes, and also when Felicity is on I can pop to the loo. You use her and Widdy for the comfort breaks  When will Anne leave?

I'm watching the result show now, and Duffy is singing.  There's a bit lit up DUFFY sign in the background, but when they cut to the low down camera angle, the dancers and Duffy obscure bits of the letters, and it looks like it says DUREX.

Juts thought I'd share that.

Is it just me, or does Anne Widdecombe on Strictly Come look like a Cocker Spaniel dancing with her master, and looking lovingly up at him as she does so.

My dogs (RIP) used to love dancing.

In fact Ann's performance tonight was so bad she gets it for keeps.   Time for an exit !

WHich is the question ....

Is this a dancing competition as it tries to be or entertainment for the baying masses.

The whole point (as I understand this) is that she remains in the competition by the votes of the public.. they are being entertained and want her there. She is abiding by all the rules and unless they are changed in a fit of pique or she is bullied out like Jon Sargent then she is there for keeps.

Same for the X factor....see off the judges by voting for the worst possible performer.

Excellent... Now what will they do if she wins?

Will we see the pretend facade of respectable competition lifted and the true colours revealed

Oh! Yeah, I usually go to the kettle or fridge when she comes on...

I'd certainly not be interested in any meat in the fridge when Anne Widdecombe is on.
It is simpler than it looks.

Every time I see the old bat I get this running through my head:

She was on BBC Breakfast this morning, saying that it's a vote, and she is the one person on the programme who understands what democracy is. Subtext: the problem with democracy is that you give the masses a say in the result....

She also pointed out that it is entertainment, not a dance contest.  If it was a dance contest, then all the competitors would have to start out at a similar standard.

Good on her I say. She's opened herself up to criticism, and given as good as she's got, while actually remaining pretty modest and giving huge credit to Anton - she just said that if they won, he ought to get the trophy, and I think she really meant it.  And their routines are hilarious - partly down to his comic talent, it's true.

On another note, it is wrong to be developing a passion for Anton du Beke? I'm quite sure I'm not his type, so to speak.

Totally agree with you Arch, and it was hilarious when she said 'Am I the only one who understands this process?'

It's a bloody entertainment show, despite what the judges say.

I think the thing I like is that she's fully aware of her shortcomings and happy to play them up, and take the flack for them.  There are one or two of the others who I feel are taking it and themselves a tad too seriously.

Well, ok, it's mostly Patsy Kensit.  But maybe I just can't stand her over exagerrated reactions every week when she gets through.

Well, exactly, and it's not like any of them are hoping to get a life changing contract for a dance career out of it. I don't care either way, by the way, because I don't watch it. And I hate Anne Widdecombe.

I find her (and her performances) dull and somewhat irritating and I do sometimes wonder about the effect of making a politician whose views I find fairly offensive overall seem all cute and cuddly and 'the underdog' and all that tripe - she's getting a lot of media coverage, much of it reasonably sympathetic.

But in terms of the show I just don't pay much attention when she's performing and tend to wander off when she's being interviewed, in the same way as I have to not watch Bruce's links, because I find it very uncomfortable viewing.  All the flap and 'she should go' nonsense annoys me because it attributes a greater importance than is warranted to her and her continued participation.  I'd like her to be voted off, but not enough to pay for a vote for any of the others!

She and Anton were in top form last night, it was hugely entertaining (in a good way !).  But its still time for her to go !

Another fab performance from Dr Pamela last night, but what a shame about Scott - he got our vote in any case.

See, I just don't find it entertaining at all.  Toe-curlingly embarassingly bad, maybe.  But I find watching really bad performances incredibly uncomfortable in general.

Yes, I felt like that watching Ann last week.  But it was much more fun this week.

I was giggling from the moment Anton sat up in the dry ice fog and yelled "Anne!"

I don't particularly like some of her views either, but she is now a retired politician, and out to have some fun (as she said on Breakfast). Everyone ought to have some fun.  I guess for me she's just the right side of bad to be funny.  Like Les Dawson on the piano - although of course to do that sort of bad, you have to actually be pretty good to start with, so it's a different sort of joke.

I find Brucie much more cringeworthy.  Last night he told a joke about one of the competitors (Pam?) saying she didn't want to get inside his head, because she was agrophobic.  Cue Audience laughing, because they've got it, instantly.  But he shushed them, and then delivered the 'punchline' - "because inside your head is such a wide empty space"....  And the audience had to try and laugh all over again.  An entertainer who still had it (did he ever, I've never liked him) would have just cut it short on the laugh.

Alas, I don't suppose he'll retire until the chap with the scythe comes for him, and perhaps neither Heaven or Hell are prepared to book him for eternity...

The whole Anne thing (previously John) is a classic case of the lunatics taking over the asylum. "Reality TV" became popular ten years or so ago and now their producers are reaping what they sowed.....

Having said that, generally on Strictly the best dancer wins. Same with I'm a celeb - usually the person who is best at just getting along with people and getting stuck in wins.

Strictly, IMO should be a dancing competition. Even if it is just one to entertain people. But if we're talking about something as futile as something like dancing (or indeed any type of competition) entertainment is all it ever is.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but Anne should just piss off and let those who actually have some ability be rewarded for what they have achieved in the show.....
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Tbh, from the point of view of 'fariness' or the 'competition' I wouldn't give a monkey's if Anne won it - it's not like it matters, or makes a difference in the world, is it?  But it would be vaguely annoying IMO to have time in the final taken up with her inept meanderings and attitude when we could be watching something rather better.  It simply wasn't the same when they ended up with a two couple final and, since I pretty much ignore the 'contributions' of AW, if she stays in to the end it would effctively be a 2 couple final.

I presume that bobb would prefer any of the other couples to stay in the show rather that Anne and Anton, given his stated reasons for watching  ;D

The producers pick the people taking part and the public get to vote. That's it really.

Although, I miss Darren Bennett and Lilya Kopilova.  :(

Who gives a rat's arse about Ballroom Dancing?

If the public wanted to watch superb dancing they wouldn't allow celebs on there, they could just watch professionals doing it better.

It's entertainment (not for me I hasten to add) and I assume people like to see Widdecombe being dragged around like some camp, bewildered corpse.

I suppose that we're supposed to be appreciating the finer points of the dancer's artistry but I have to say that this evening's results show opening dance had me appreciating other things entirely.  Followed by Ola's rumba.  I'm reminded of one of Dr Pam's intro's on Not the Nine O'clock News - "And now we have some explicit pornography thinly disguised as choreography".  Not that I'm complaining

Indeed, I watched the pro dances tonight and thought that certain members of this forum would probably greatly appreciate the efforts of the costume department today.

Regulator, I'm afraid I can't really comment on Widders as I left the room!
