Badminton Elbow?
« on: 12 October, 2010, 09:22:22 pm »
I play badminton but it looks like I may be invalided out for the near future. I keep getting a dreadful pain in my forearm, which don't get doing anything else. I laid off for a few months and it got better, been playing for a few weeks and it as bad as it was.  I am going to have to visit a physio, wondered if anyone recognises it as a condition?

I suspect the actions in badminton are not the same as in tennis and different muscles are likely to be troublesome.
It's probably best to see a sports therapist or discuss this with other badminton players. I doubt you'll be the first to suffer this way.

According to my book of sports injuries, tennis elbow is common in badminton, from having too tight an action.

Umm thanks all. I had my suspicions, from the Wikipedia "at home test" it sounds very likely. Thankfully, at least I have a good sports physio to go to.

My father had it from badminton.  It vanished after a weekend of heavy DIY involving a lot of screwdriver use.

I've got tennis/golf elbow (pain both inside and outside of joint). But it's in my left arm, whereas I'm right handed, and I don't play tennis or golf - or indeed do anything repetivive with my left hand.

It's a bugger to shift too!

Never had it Ham (despite playing badminton and tennis for years and years). Once you're fit again there's a court not far from here in SE1 that we sometimes use for a lunchtime game if you're interested...

Very interested.... if I ever return. I spent about 3 months off, but going back to it caused more trouble in less time and is taking longer to return to normal. This is the second bout.

Of course I could always go to a physio or some such....

Doctor put me on a course of Ibuprofen for a week which helped a lot.

It's not gone totally but it's a lot better (9 months since it started).

I triggered it by using one of those Powerball wrist strentheners, ironically I've seen then suggested as a therapy for Tennis Elbow.  When I first did it, it felt like someone had a soldering iron on my elbow, then it migrated into my forearm.  I could honk on my handlebars all day and yet couldn't pick up a pencil.  I think it should be called "Kettle Elbow" as that's where most people experience most trouble, picking up a kettle.

Using a PC mouse doesn't help with recovery, swap mouse hands.

You can definitely get this from badminton. I’ve had to several times. I find the only cure is… rest! I know it’s a pain but really it’s the only thing that works.
