did similar in my office using single board approx. 230mm deep and cut to length. A bit more expensive as I used the spur system on plain walls, so cost of brackets as well.  No need to treat them for indoor use and they are planed smooth enough for books.

We'll probably keep the pine as it is. It may get painted in future to match the decor, which would cost a few pennies worth of paint for each shelf.

Screwfix et all do ABS shelving units that can take around 45kg per shelf. Even moisture resistant MDF is a no go. You want marine ply at the very least.
