Tan Hill overnighter - Friday 18/08/17
« on: 10 August, 2017, 11:27:05 pm »
Splitting this out from the Northallerton pub rides thread - anyone fancy an overnighter at Tan Hill? Basically, ride to the pub, camp up, get pissed, sleep it off, have a massive full English in the morning and ride back to Darlo via the Sleightholme track.

Dale and I are meeting at Darlo station to ride up - all welcome for a steady ride. Or make your own way there.

Dr Pharti is coming as well, but I assume he's making his own way there. We'll pester him for stories of his travels in Central Asia.

That would appeal, but we have a massive family gathering in Essex on 19th.

Similarly it would appeal, but I'm going, erm, racing on the 19th.

Watching the weather forecast. I had enough rain to last for a while as we were passing through Lincolnshire last week.
Mind the hills looked great yesterday as I came over Stainmore (in the car).

Sounds a fantastic idea.
Not sure if I have the legs for it. Will speak to the family unit and see if I can get away.

OT but apparently the tan hill inn's up for sale. 900 grand.
Couldn't help noticing the pub in lindisfarne is up for sale as well, for about 60 grand ;D possibly explained by which one gets the most visitors...

£60 k buys you the lease of the pub on Holy Island , not the freehold. The rent from the tenants doesn't cover the cost of the lease, so you would need to be entreprenuerial in order to raise the rent or increase the T/O in order to pay the lease charge.
Tan Hill offer is freehold. It changes hands regularly (often depending on the severity of the winter) as the novelty of living at England's highest pub wears off eventually. It's a long way to go shopping.

Briilliant. I assume you'd just meet us there? You could get a train to Northallerton and ride up from there. I'm not sure what time we're leaving Darlo.

I have to check schedules; could be a complicated following week. Might take Fri arvo off and ride up.

MrC, if you are passing through NTR, and fancy a cuppa, you'll need to check which house we are in as we are moving on Friday.

We're leaving Darlo 2-ish from Bank Top, if anyone else wants to join us. Should arrive no later than 6 or so.

I've not booked ahead, I figure we can make it up, or go and camp out on the fells if it's full.

At the moment I'm fighting a stomach bug. Seems to be lifting, so I hope it is one of those 24hr things. MrsC thinks I should still go but maybe catch train part of the way there.

Kirkby Stephen's probably your best bet as that's the closest station, but I dunno what trains are available. It's not a bad run up from Northallerton  either if you can get a train there, then head up Swaledale/Arkengarthdale. The A684 from Northallerton is a shit road, so I wouldn't bother going that way.

Anyone else, meet 2-ish at the Costa on Darlo station platform for a gentle ride up.

I'm afraid I'mgoing to be a no-show for this. Still as weak as a kitten, no way could I manage the hill up to the pub. Eating for the first time since Wed.

It bloody was, wasn't it?

I'll rustle up some photos in a bit. But Top Tip in the meantime: Tan Hill has bunk rooms! Debs stayed on her tod in a 6-berth dorm. £30 a night including breakfast. There's also an 8-berth dorm, but the band were in there. I didn't think much of the band, though they had a cute dog onna bit of string.

We had me, D.A.L.E., Karla/bunbury/pharti, my sister and her partner, our mate Debs, and lovely Mike (not CrinklyLion's mate lovely Mike, a different lovely Mike). The ride up with me, Dale and Debs was hard yakka, the ride back to Barnie was awesome. We discussed the ethics of swapping bikes at the cafe in Barnie, as there was about 12 grand's worth of bikes in one alcove (for a cafe run, I ask you), but I'll keep my battered old tourer - mainly cos Dale's Disc Trucker is a 56. I'd have had it if it was a 54.

It's the first time I've ever known the bar at Tan Hill to shut. We were in bed by about 12.30. Woken up at stupid o'clock by the cockerel, which came inbetween my tent and Karla's. Occasionally the flapping of Karla's tent woke me as well.

Karla/bunbury/pharti

Flatus/Ramprikesh/whatever stopped changing his name so I felt I had to carry on in his place.
