Media centre playlists 101

I have a Raspberry Pi running xbmc. I use this to play back various MP4 files and MP3 files. The MP3 are nearly all radio plays or comedy I've grabbed using get_iplayer.

I also have a stack of CDs.  It would probably be a Good Thing to rip all my CDs for playing on the Pi too. What I'd like to do is have music CDs playable in a random selection, while the radio plays play only in the correct order and when chosen, if you see what I mean.

Are playlists the way to do this? xbmc suppports "smart playlists" and I'm busy reading up about those. Or should I put music in one folder (source) and plays in another and somehow enable random playing on the music folder only? I don't think this approach will work as multiple souces seem to get scanned into one library.

Sorry if this is a bit rambling, it's a bit of thinking out loud.
