Internet connection but no web pages?

Just returned from holibobs and one PC won't load any web pages. What can have changed?
What we have tried: network is fine; ipconfig all present and correct; no proxy or other stuff in "connection properties"; both Chrome and IE have the same problem.
This is on windows 7.

Possibly a DNS issue? What happens if you try to ping
www.bbc.co.uk
from the command prompt? does the PC return an IP address?

ping is fine, resolves bbc.co.uk fine, but then the browser says the site can't be connected to. Very strange.
