Indie music and 'Have you heard of...'
« on: 11 April, 2008, 01:03:09 pm »
Because Indie music is, by it's nature, not all that publicised I thought I'd use this thread as a place for people to link to indie music that's not widely known.

I'll start with http://www.youtube.com/v/MMK6rKt2NYA&rel=1

Basically, I'm bored of my music collection and want to hear some new stuff!

Got that album for a quid in WH Smith a while back!

If you like Secret machines you might like Lowgold?

Most of the Secret Machines stuff seems to be generic loud indie, I just liked that song for some reason. Listening to it now though ta :)

Not had anything out for a while, but the last Modest Mouse album was really good.

If the kind of Indie they play at South by Southwest interests you, this
http://hewgill.com/sxsw/
is home to a Torrent featuring 764 tracks from bands playing at this year's festival.

Recommendations not SXSW related are Devotchka and 17 Hippies (oh and Nada Surf, more 'indie' than Indie, but the latest album is good).

Have any of you lot ever heard of Mae? I listened to their albmun "The everglow" every day for about 2 months last year. It found it to be really good because each song lead on fromt the previous such that it was like a story and the intensity changed as it all went on too. Finally, it had some great high tempo turbo tunes on it!

I have a colleague who is into "indie". He asked me for a copy of Pink Floyd's "Run like Hell" once as he thought it was brilliant.

I never thought of Pink Floyd as an Indie Band ;D.

But what does indie mean these days? It is all a bit fluid, really, and I think the term "indie" ceased to mean anything since the Oasis vs Blur "debate". I blame the Stereophonics. No reason to do so other than the fact they are the Stereophonics.

Regardless, hidden gems? Neutral Milk Hotel

I saw Devotchka on Late with Jools the other night, one song in particular I really liked, can't remember what it was called though. They certainly had an interesting look, I have haven't seen many other bands featuring someone playing a tuba (or something similar) with Christmas lights all over it!

My favourite band at the moment is Band of Horses, so that's my recommendation :)

My definition of 'indie' is pretty much any guitar-based band who aren't noisy enough to be 'rock' :)

Indie originally stood for independant record label but then again, R&B originally stood for rhythm and blues.

Great idea for a thread :).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS_DBand2No - I couldn't find 'C'est Supercool' anywhere on the net, unfortunately, but it's a really good song.

Cowbell by Tapes 'n Tapes - you really need to listen to the whole song :)

You must be familiar with The Subways Gonzo?

If you fancy something chilled try A Lily, which is basically that bod from the excellent Yndi Halda.

Indeed. When was its meaning change to refer to meaningless merde?

Oh, I do weird stuff because I used to buy records based on reviews in Melody Maker.

Somewhere in my CD collection (now all ripped to MP3) lurk The Young Gods, Pale Saints and numerous other 4AD bands, Furniture, Snuff etc etc.

And nowadays it stands for "ruinin' ballads" >:(

The Pale Saints! One of my favourites from that time, along with Ultra Vivid Scene and Galaxie 500. I went to school with a guy who was related to the owner of 4AD, so he used to get all the stuff before release... we were way too cool for school ;D
