Dry rotted tyres on utility hybrid bike
« on: 06 February, 2024, 11:52:35 am »
Whilst cleaning and servicing the Gas Pipe Hybrid yesterday, I noted both it's Continental Contact tyres were moderately dry-rotted. Most noticeable on the sidewalls, but the tread looks to be affected also.
I'm thinking I should swap them out as I'm regularly doing moderately hilly rides and occasionally get some speed up on the descents.

Would you?

Yes.
Otherwise you're just waiting for them to go.

"Dry rotted..."?

Continental has some advice on storing / looking after tyres.

Garage qualifies as dark, dry and well ventilated.

I think these tyres were on the bike when I got it, which could be upwards of 8 years ago.
Not sure when the bike was manufactured. The hubs on the bike date back to 1995 ... I know it's had some parts swapped around so I don't know what is/what isn't original equipment.

So those tyres are somewhere between ~8 and ~29 years old.

I've got some Pirelli Cycl-e Crossterrain XT's on order - meant for e-Bikes but should do the job just fine.
