BB: what's this bit called and how do I remove it?
« on: 18 November, 2018, 04:27:42 pm »
I'm taking apart a cheapy kid's bike and have got as far as these silvery bits in the bottom bracket (single piece crank):

Are these cones? Cups? Something elses?

How do I remove them?
Are they just going to be press fit? Would tapping the far side from through the shell work?

I need to be able to reassemble the bike afterwards, so not looking for destructive removal methods!

It's a Thompson or Ashtabula BB.  The cups can be drifted out and pressed back in but you might as well clean them in situ if they're not pitted.

As Roger said. No need to knock them out of the frame, just clean in situ.

Pleanty of grease with the bearings, they aren't sealed *AT ALL*.

Thanks rogerzilla - seems it's an Ashtabula BB and the new vocab is unlocking another layer of internet searching!

just clean

pffff!   ;D

I'm going to be chopping the frame and then welding onto the BB, so I'd prefer to remove these if I can. No idea how they're react to heat, but I'm imagining it would be less than ideal!

In that case simply remove with a drift and a Brummie screwdriver...

Okeycokey.

Think it's going to need a bit more welly than I can give it on my lounge floor, so will have at it in a workshop tomorrow now I know there aren't any threads in there.

A headset cup remover (rocket tool) would do a good job.

Yeah: I'm at the point where I need to remove the headset cups too!

Freed the seized quill stem, though!

This I want to see! But probably not actually ride. Maybe something Wobbly John would ride...

That 'drawing' doesn't look at all wobbly.

Update: I made a thingy and it worked a treat.

Next: Need to make between 3 and 5 pairs of forks/stays (mapping standard anatomy terms onto this project is proving a bit of a challenge at times!)

They're definitely onto something with that handlebar and pedal configuration - I'm liking the slimline storage profile

For some reason the phrase two independent breaking(sic) mechanisms popped into my mind...

Top workshopping! It looks very two dimensional. I do admire the flappetty "in line" pedals. Must be so much more aerodynamic that way, I'm surprised we haven't seen it the TT stages of any of the big tours (or has the UCI already banned it?).

Nice, i'm now wondering where the inspirational road markings come from after confirming it's not conforming to the TSRGD diagram for a bike.

The best thing (apart from the pedals) is watching people react to it.  Their expression goes from "Why is there a bike here?" to "Wait what?"

Interestingly, this is similar to the facial expression progression of cyclists encountering particularly creative Silly Sustrans Gates™ for the first time, without the inevitable "Oh, for fuck's sake." stage.

I'm pinging around between 4 different workshops at the moment - between them they just about have the space and tools I need, but not really in useful densities or combinations

There's been a lot of this:

The pictogram on the lane in the other direction was differently wrong:

Thanks for the nice words, folks!  ;D

Thanks to clicking on that, I now know that the Boing Zone Trampoline Park is a thing.  That's what I'd want to call it if I owned a trampoline park.  (Which, for the record, is extremely unlikely.)
