What do I need for camping
« on: 20 July, 2008, 04:58:28 pm »

So what do I need to take to camping for 3 nights?

I have tent
Air mattress (me back otherwise it'd be a camping matt)
Sleeping bag
Stove
Pan set
Coolbox
Towel
Change of clothes
Torch
Loo roll
First aid kit
Book to read
Phone
Leathermans
All food + beer will be got from the local supermarket

What might I need in the way of tools for doing stuff?

LED lamp thing. A torch is a PITA for generic lighting. And a Thermarest with chair addon for supreme comfort. Forget mats and airbeds, Thermarest is the deal.

I hope you're camping for a reason. I've never understood why on earth people go camping for the sheer sake of it. I'll camp if it's for a reason; when climbing for example. But the idea of just camping fills me with horror.

Basically the old group of friends are getting together for a social/catch up. Coming from far flung places of ze world. Couldn't find a single hotel that could put us all up, and it would have worked out quite expensive so we've opted to go camping :)

Water container = Was thinking of buying a few 5l bottles of water from the supermarket?
My torch has a candle mode, so should be ok, but I suppose I can get a dedicatantt mini flood or something for sitting around outside while we get the fire going :) Would a Dinotte be overkill?

Matches are a good idea, as is the battery pump for my air bed lol.

Fuel I'll get.

Airbed has a built in matress. Wassa Thermarest?
Washkit I'll have
Sewing kit... I'm sure I can make something up.

Cuddly toy? I'm the only bloke going.

Tissues/wet wipes/ bin bags/ washing up liquid/sponge/paperplates/paper cups we can get from the supermarket.

...What might I need in the way of tools for doing stuff?

Assuming that you don't mean anything to do with bikes (which would happily be an entire thread in it's own right), I guess you mean general camping type tools.

A knife and/or cutters. You never know when you may need to slice something up.
Gaffer tape.  Useful for sticking together, attaching, and generally repairing all sorts of things.
String/Cord.  For lashing things together, as a clothes lines, to repair broken guys on tents, etc ...
Lighting stuff ie Firesteel, Maya dust etc.  If you don't want to be boring and use matches.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Since I take it this is not kit for cycle camping, take a hammer or mallet for tent pegs - just in case our summer dries out a bit.

Blimey!

Obviously then you don't need to take anything apart from your mojo.

(and perhaps, ahem...  a few precautions)

The gurls will have everything else.

Not allowed an campfire at the same, damn people. So now have to take a firebowl or something too.

3 days.  And there's a local supermarket.

And you ask what to take?   ::-)

How much sewing are you likely to do?   ;D

I never take sewing stuff camping, not even when rode across America and camped each night. No stove or food either,

Just enough to stop your shelter disintegrating in howling gale/pissing rain  ;D ;D

A film canister containg a needle and thread will do.

Shurely gaffa tape will sort that and work as a temporary stop measure in place of sewing?

I don't know your tent.
If I had a D ring pulling out, I don't think gaffer tape would do the job.

Some tent coatings do not stick to anything.

Three days, in Summer, in a campsite with all the usual facilities. You really don't need much!

Relax, you have a tent, a stove and stuff, and no real extremes of weather. If you had to repair a tent in the middle of a 400km trek, then you might have to be prepared.

Have a play with the tent before you go, and then forget about it. Three days means fun. Don't worry! You will have fun!

Think of me, wild camping at 2700m, with a slowly defrosting ice shell of a tent, that has to be packed up for a dawn start!
