I'm not sure of the details as I'm not (yet) a subscriber to Bicycle Quarterly but I loved this image, and it seemed appropriately mad scientist/yacf-esque  in nature .  ;D

Must try putting a motor on my turbo.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Dare I ask why?

Removing siping to make a slick tyre?
Removing material to reduce weight/rolling resistance?
Removing mould release from a new tyre to improve grip?
Just loves the smell of hot rubber in the morning?

 ???

Most of the above - it was mainly applied to car and motorcycle racing tyres, and one other aspect was to improve the roundness as well.

Compass cycles / Bicycle quarterly  have a 'bit of a thing' about tyres generally - larger volumes, lower pressures, supple casings, reduced rolling resistance, so it's all part of a bigger discussion.  The pic was (re) posted on 1st April as part of a solid tyre April fool, but it was re-using an earlier pic which was from a serious article by a framebuilder. I've not read the article but it's titled
'Shaving tires for better performance'.

& it's a great pic!  ;D a copy of which will go on the boards when the sekrit bunker TM gets fettled this weekend.
