Bike Spaces on Northern Rail service from Brid?
« on: 03 July, 2016, 01:58:51 pm »
My SO and I are considering taking the train from Bridlington in August (Saturday 9:30 pm service) to get back from a "Way of the Roses" trans Penine ride. I notice that two "free first come first served" bike spaces are available per train. No mention of pre-booking availability. I doubt I will get any mileage out of phoning them given previous experiences...
Does anyone have experience with bicycles on Northern Rail? Are they sticklers for the rules? Is this service busy?
Any advice would be appreciated.  :)

Not done that route but my experience of Northern Rail is that you can't book bikes and they will take up to 4 at the guard's discretion.
I am often asked, what does YOAV stand for? It stands for Yoav On A Velo

Northern tend to be very lax about bikes: I've seen more than 4 on there.  They're basically first come first served, with no reservations needed.  You shouldn't have a problem getting on there.

Ive been on a train from Driffield to Scarborough ( Brid is one of the stops)  and it had about ten bikes piled up in the bike space, a group had cycled from west Yorkshire somewhere to Bempton overnight.  Conductor wasnt bothered although he was quite interested in what theyd been up to.  Most of the time you wont get anywhere near that many though! You'll be fine.

I've seen more than two bikes piled up on trains carried along this line.  At 9:30pm most of the prams will be out of the way so - fingers crossed - you could be fine.

As it happens I'm doing the WotR this month with two mates who plan to take the train back from Brid.  However, ever the pessimist, I'm working on the assumption that the train will be rammed with bikes; I'm taking lights and looking to clock up 100+ miles for the second day of our trip  :)

With Northern Rail due to be nationalised, I wonder if the directors will raid the company's
finances before March?
