Minor victory - Birmingham household waste sites by cycle
« on: 27 October, 2020, 02:55:09 pm »
I just tried again, after months of storing assorted waste, and received this:

Hi Kim,
I don't believe I have seen your previous email. My apologies as I always try to reply as quickly as I can to any query. We do not have any objections to you using your bicycle, we have others that do the same. When filling out the application form to book a slot all you need to do is put the word 'Bicycle' where the form asks you for a car registration. Doing this will allow you to make a booking just the same as those who have four wheels.

Kind regards
Maxine

I've suggested they change the wording on the website to something clearer than:

Access will be by car only, strictly no pedestrians allowed

Well on the wheels front a 'pedal cycle' combination of trike and trailer could have five...

Excellent news! I need to do a run to clear out all our tetrapacks and the cargo trike would be perfect for the job.

O yay

Ipswich lumps cyclists and pedestrians alongside cars without trailers.  I (correctly) assumed that a cycle with a trailer still qualified as a car without trailer on account of still having limited luggage volume (is luggage something you lug or is there another derivation?).
"for registration use n/a" so I did.

I think we had similar 'motorist only' restrictions way back, or it was much better hidden and needed a local Kim to have it corrected.

Just taken a load to Lifford Lane.  No issues.  (Possibly because I used four wheels? :))

Interesting.  The last time I took a trailer load down to Jericho Lane in Liverpool, also operated by Veolia they wouldn't let me in.  I may make further enquiries.

Dear Andrew

Many thanks for your email.

We are sorry that you have been refused access to our Otterspool HWRC using your bicycle trailer.  Access by bicycle is permitted.

That should be illegal currently. Covid regulations require you to be in a vehicle and neither driver nor passenger exit from it when using a drive through. To my mind riding a bicycle would not be classed as being in a vehicle. Possibly a velomobile would count. But then again they are not turning away motorbikes.
