Thanks for all replies and info  after a few pointers from people in the know i decided on an Etrex, it  arrived today, just waiting on the mount for it.

Which mount have you ordered? I'm also looking for a stem mount for my Etrex vista cx.
(I've learnt how to use it for routing with Mapsource).

Where did you get the maps from ?

I've got a TOPO GB dvd that was purchased a few years ago. Does the mount that you bought
have a quick release attachment, to avoid it being on the stem when it's not needed?

No, you have to attach it with cable ties or some other bodge so that it's a permanent fixture.
