Your funeral playlist
« on: 20 September, 2010, 09:23:51 pm »
Oh, come on, I bet I'm not the only one with a playlist for their funeral/the bunfight afterwards.

And, by the way, wear black.

It's a pain in the arse choosing an outfit.  Wearing black is much easier.  But try not to be too sad.

OK, here's mine.

The ones you're allowed to have a good cry to.

Angel - Eurythmics
Into The West - Annie Lennox (from LOTR III)

Have a glass of something, and a vol-au-vent, and relax a bit to:

Stay By Me - Annie Lennox
Don't Talk to Me About Love - Altered Images
Saved By Love - Amy Grant
Revolution Earth - B52's (this one's for the Juggler)
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

Start getting a bit smashed now, and eyeing up the considerable talent at my funeral.  Most of my friends are, actually, pretty easy on the eye.  I won't mind at all if you pull.  It's what life is all about.

Prettiest Eyes - Beautiful South
The Acoustic Motorbike - Luka Bloom
Spirits (Having Flown) - The Bee Gees
Slipping Through My Fingers - Abba (for my beautiful daughter)
Let Your Love Flow - The Bellamy Brothers
Central Reservation - Beth Orton - it reminds me of being young
E=Mc2 - Big Audio Dynamite

Please feel free to continue to the pub, or just go home, or go to work, or whatever.  It's always a relief when it's over.

Come on then, cough up you lot.  What's your funeral playlist?

In all seriousness, though, I won't care.  I'll be dead.  Given the option I rather like Frank Turner's "Long Live the Queen" and if my friends / family opted for 'civilised' rather than 'rampant piss-up' then they should know that my favourite requiems are Faure and Rutter (good background music for a civilised funeral tea) but really?  People should play what they like.

I disagree.  It's my funeral.  A chance to remember me.  And my naff taste in music

There's only an hour's worth of music there, and I'll be dead a bloody long time.

Faure's requiem is sublime and beautiful.  Therefore not reminiscent of me at all.  Though I prefer Verdi's, personally.

Just Beethoven's Symphony No.6 in F, Op 68 First Movement.

Ever since I first saw Sol ' <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/edQNjJZFdLU&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/edQNjJZFdLU&rel=1</a>' in Soylent Green back in the '70s..

Is there a song entitled "Ha - I've left all my money to the Hamster Benevolent Fund, so the rest of you can F*ck right Off"?

That one.

Funeral? Just feed my body to the dogs, then have a party with your own choice of music!

No black, no jackets, no ties.

Lots of fun!!

I talk to the wind : King Crimson
Song to the Siren : This Mortal Coil
Heaven : Talking Heads
Listening Wind : Talking Heads
Smack my Bitch up : The Prodigy
Easy to Slip Away : Peter Hammill
Little Fluffy Clouds : The Orb
Father, Son : Peter Gabriel
Here Comes The Flood : Peter Gabriel
Love Will Tear Us Apart : Joy Division

If I really wanted to mess things up I'd insist on Discrete Music : Brian Eno (It is 30 minutes long and everyone could sit there chatting in reflection, or for less time if they needed a fag)
It is simpler than it looks.

Don't know about a playlist, but I want a white cardboard coffin and a big box of marker pens so you can write on it what you really thought of me...

Playlist - whatever you want. I'll have caused you enough grief during my life, it's time to get your won back.

Another vote for Jake Thackray plus the theme music to QI. I don't want a church do but there is a part of me that loves the idea of everybody sitting in the pews as the coffin is carried down the aisle to that QI them tune.

I went to a funeral about a year ago and one of the songs played during the service was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/l9K4BKkLaCI&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/l9K4BKkLaCI&rel=1</a>. I loved it. The guy that died was middle aged and a joker to the end.

My taste in music tends towards the morose, so I'm afraid any funeral with me in the box and in charge of the playlist is going to be a bit sombre.

Definitely,

The Gunners Dream - Pink Floyd.
Here Comes the Flood - Peter Gabriel.

Possibly.

I'll Follow You Tonight - Anna Ternheim
Good to be here - Lindisfarne

I've looked at other tracks I was thinking of putting on here, and decided that I'm a miserable bugger.  ;D

I figure I might as well start with a downbeat selection, to get everyone in the mood...

Adagio for strings  - Samuel Barber
Dust In The Wind - Kansas
Song To The Siren - Robert Plant
Black Gives Way To Blue - Alice In Chains
Watching The World Go By - Gun
Who Wants To Live Forever - Queen

Once it's BBQ time, let's have some fun...

Fire! - The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown
Hells Bells - The Urban Voodoo Machine
Some Like It Hot - Power Station
We Are All Made Of Stars - Moby
Louie, Louie - Motorhead
Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life - Monty Python

We did this in the y-less place.  My answer is still the same - A lone piper will play Flowers Of The Forest.  Complete with the buggering off, still playing fade out.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

It's the ultimate mixtape/compilation cd isn't it?

The Smiths would figure highly in mine - "Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head..." or "Good times, for a change, see the luck I've had could make a good man turn bad..." As opening lines, they'd raise a wry smile.

Something suitably bleak and existential from The Verve's A Northern Soul album would also go down well.

Funerals are rarely bleak and existential.

They are a bit sad - then everyone goes to the pub for a buffet.

I want to be cremated and my remains launched into the sky in a home made rocket. I'd like the rocket to be unveiled to the amassed crowd to 'also sprach zarathrustra'.

I really should stop planning my funeral in the pub.

It's a fair bet that none of the music for my funeral would meet with my mother's approval.  ::-)

I'm hoping there's also a reasonable chance that she won't be there . . .  ;D

Got to include the stripped down Here Comes the Flood from Shaking the Tree.
Hello Earth from Hounds of Love
To join those two tracks Don't Give Up from So
Supper's Ready plus the whole In the Cage/Medley/Afterglow from side 3 of Three Sides Live and Us and Them

Oh! And if you need a crib for the artistes then you don't have the musical taste for my funeral and you will be forcibly ejected by Mrs. Torslanda who will, of course, be resplendent in her horned helmet and heavy metal breastplate . . .

Which would be a shame cos there's a grand* behind the bar and when that's gone yer buyin' yer own!
