Rennes - Brest - Rennes BRM 600 - 9th June 2018
« on: 06 October, 2017, 09:50:04 pm »
Hello all,

Next year my club will be running Rennes - Brest - Rennes which is a French Brevet run infrequently generally the year before PBP. So the idea is to do the Breton part of PBP. The ride starts in Rennes, joins the PBP route at Vieux Vy sur Couesnon, then riders have to control in Loudeac, Carhaix, Brest and finally retrace back. It probably is the hardest bit of the PBP route but also the nicest IMHO. It is coming from a Breton, not that we are known for being objective on the relative merits of he rest of France and Brittany, but you can ask "PBP anciens" for an impartial opinion about this.
So for all the PBP nostalgic, this is an occasion to climb the Roc Trevezel, go through Huelgoat and others Breton villages and for those who have never done PBP an occasion to scout the hardest bit, not that it is nowhere as hard as randonnees like the mille Cymru. A zed stop will be organised somewhere close after Brest.

To get there from the UK (or at least Southern England), the easiest and cheapest is probably to take the ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo and then either ride the 65km or so to the start or take the train that wil get you and your bike to Rennes city centre. If you need accomodation in Rennes let us know here and we will make our best to help you. The actual start is in Chantepie which is just on the edge of Rennes.

Those who want to practice their French can go there : http://parisbrestparis2007.actifforum.com/t5596-rennes-brest-rennes-2018

Sounds good - and I'd certainly echo the notion that the middle 600 of PBP is more interesting topographically than the first and last 300s.

Lots of reasonably-priced hotels near the start too
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

This looks quite appealing.

Shame it's the same week as the two most appealing AUK events :(  #firstworldproblem

Have fun everyone!

A Ruban Blanc is the French equivalent of a yacf'er, for registering I am not sure how they plan to do the pre-registering but I've asked the organiser in chief, I am mere ambassador or "représentant Français chez yacf".

As soon as I get news, I let you know but don't worry there will be room for our British friends.

Sounds very interesting.

but I'm not sure you are free that weekend Ian.  However, I am very definitely up for this.  It sounds like a job for my Moulton which fits unobtrusively on Eurostar and TGV.

Did I forget to mention that Rennes is just a 1h25 away from Paris? So yes for those of you with folding bike or at least a bike that can fit in a bike bag, that's easy by Eurostar.

Registration will be open in January. To keep things simple, people coming from abroad will be able to register in advance and pay on the day just before the start.

Given my aim for 2018 is quality rather than quantity, this appeals.

With the ability to work from pretty much anywhere, I could do this with possibly just the Monday off work to recuperate and travel home.

Is there likely to be somewhere to leave stuff at HQ?  I'm thinking of empty Bike bags

There will be, I think that they will let you leave stuff at the start as it will be from the organising club if not you are welcome to leave stuff at my place which is about 5km from the start.

http://www.chantepie-cyclo.fr/images/stories/documents/600.pdf has got pretty much all the required information ... except it requires payment by cheque.  Bit of an issue for those us from outside the Eurozone.

I'm not sure about "le port du casque est très fortement conseillé."  I must wear headphones?

By "Une lampe frontale n'est pas considérée comme un éclairage", is that referring to a head torch?

It means wearing a helmet is strongly recommended and head torches are not accepted as bike lights.

Casque = Helmet, of course!  Obvious when I think about it really.

But please don't anyone start THAT debate all over again.
