I've been allocated to the Spalding control.
I've also ticked the form saying I can drive a van. Should I send a mail saying I'm happy to van drive, or will that be picked up from the original registration form?

If you ticked "I can drive a van" on the volunteer form, it'll all be recorded.

Every control will need people who can drive a van, but I'll only need a few people in the logistics team. At the moment I'm looking to the people who've emailed me to specifically say they fancy a driving job during the event. It looks like it will be a popular choice of job.

I managed to lend a hand at Loughton, Barnie, Pock and Market Rasen last time, and would heartily recommend volunteering.

I learnt more about mass catering running Barnard Castle last time than I knew before.  Dinner parties for 20 are a doddle when you've catered for 1000 cyclists twice.  I enjoyed it hugely and am looking to (a) put my knowledge into practice at St Ives this time  (b) learning even more about mass catering and (c) seeing lots of old friends who I don't usually get to meet becuase I'm on a different part of the road from them.

I love mass catering. It's like cooking combined with a huge logistics puzzle. I really enjoyed doing it at Thorne with Sina in 2009, and doing the planning for Kirton and Market Rasen in 2013.

The volunteers were all fantastic last time! I am planning to be riding again, but if for any reason I can't I will try to do something helpful instead :)

Are you two communicating only on-line these days ?

I'm unlikely to ride and had promised the family a holiday.   Does this mean your house is free ?

I may offer to help out at the start, but it's a long way off yet.

Couldn't not volunteer, having ridden it, plus PBP twice. It's payback time.

And PBP was very good in 2015 so we have a lot to live up to - ever higher expectations, etc.
Plus, an entry for 2021? Then there is a target to aim for...

My only overnighter stint as a helper was at the Nat 400 in 2015 at Slaggyford with Peak Audax/VC167 - a cracking good time with MemSec & Julian D. So, bring it on!
PBP 2011: 1234 km by Nr. 5678 in < 90 hrs. Most auspicious...

I volunteered with alfapete on last year's WCW and had a strangely awesome time...who'd have thought that staying up all night could be so much fun?  In part it was great to witness a distance event longer than I could comprehend riding, and to stamp the cards of some of the legends of this parish; but also the company was excellent.  I'm still hoping to be able to ride LEL next year, but if it looks unlikely I will definitely volunteer somewhere.
Think it possible that you may be mistaken.

I've just returned from a very agreeable lunch with alfapete and his wife who are running the Barnard Castle control.

I could give you lots of inside gossip, except there isn't any.

What I can say is preparations are well in hand, and I reckon the control is in good hands.

We were well looked after in the Jersey Farm hotel a mile or so outside Barney.

Good food and excellent value at under a tenner a head.

Yeah, it's going to be a fab control. It's a lovely venue and we get to use all the best bits of it. E & P the controllers, are ace and the school team are really up for it.

Hope you get the time off work, PR.
