Did anyone else hear the chaffinch on R4's Tweet Of The Day this morning?
I was wondering why it was making me feel so good when I realised that although they are abundant in our garden all through the winter, they keep pretty quiet until about now.
Once you start hearing the male chaffinch song you know that spring is just around the corner.
A feel good sound if ever there was one.  :D
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

There were some primroses in flower by Highwood church. Lots of birdsong: mostly song thrushes but I think I heard one goldcrest and definitely a skylark.

I didn't manage to investigate the woodland snowdrops in the reserve, but today's ride made it a bit irrelevant.

There were snowdrops in gardens, snowdrops in odd patches on the roadside verges and glorious carpets of snowdrops in tiny bits of woodland that I've been riding past for more than a decade and never even noticed the ground flora. ;D

The great tits were hard at it ;) . The textbook song has mutated into the annual propagate or decline competiton. Improvisations on the "2 note motif" that they repeat into a phrase are getting inventive.

Blue tits have been demonstrating the resounding voices that earned the label Tomtits.

A few chaffinches singing.

Yes  :) .
The local birds are still hestitant, but are now a song that says spring is just around the corner.

I spotted a primrose in flower yesterday on the same sunny bank as the celandines. It's hard by the churchyard in Hampton-in-Arden, so may have escaped from the cultivated memorial flowers. Withal they were a sign of things to come. The celandines meanwhile, were no further on than they were 5 days ago.

Flies. Great big disgusting swarms of foul flying things.

And I was on a solo, so no nice big pilot fairing to catch all of them. And uphill, so I had my mouth open, with inevitable consequences.

A pair of crows looking like they were interested in nesting, watched over by a magpie.

Dried my clothes in the yard rather than at the laundrette today.

Am currently sitting in the yard drinking tea and listening to the birds singing. Not too cold.

Worked out in the garden for most of the day (until the Rugby took over--I really wasn't going to watch the Scotland/Italy match, honest, but as I wondered through the house it seemed such an interesting contest...)
We have crocuses in bloom. Last weekend you could barely see they were coming up.
All the fruit trees have buds which are just beginning to open.
Nice to get back outside.

Tomorrow, when we're going birdwatching assuming we can find a bit of the Somerset levels which is not under water, unfortunately does not look as good.

Having started work as a postie in early January, I've not only seen plenty of rain on my posh suburban round, but also seen the approach of spring through the blooming snowdrops, emerging daffs and now I've seen the start of the bluebells growing in my back garden. That's a tad early, so I hope they don't suffer from the inevitable frosts we'll have.

It's a marvellously warm, calm, sunny spring day today. Crocuses and daffodils in flower, a magnolia with its buds bursting, and different species up and doing. No sign of any frogspawn in the place it normally turns up.

A magpie is building a nest in a large tree behind the house. Just need a few weeks of nice weather to bring on spring for me.

I'm sure it won't be long - this pair have been hard at it all morning in the back garden - with lots of splashing as No3 tries to join in.

At the farm where my cows are overwintering, the owner has some roses growing up a wall.  One of them was blooming at the weekend!

We has a single rose flower for a couple of weeks then the storms put paid to that.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

The cherry blossom trees on part of my round are showing signs of bursting into flower. Magnolias too.
