Porridge

It's that time of year again.

Well, I do make it all year, but much less in the summer.

Anyone else had some this week?

If you count Sunday as this week, then yes. I will have more later on in the week. I still make it the same way by pouring boiling water over the oats in the bowl. Make cous cous the same way too and polenta (the last two don't contain oats.)

Mmm...reminded how good your porridge is, Wow. :)

Sadly, I ran out of oats this morning.  I've perversely been eating porridge all summer... ;D

I eat raw porridge oats, my partner has porridge, made by me in the microwave. I make him porridge once or twice per week in summer and maybe 2-3 times a week in the winter.

Breakfast every 2nd day, approx, is porridge. Doesn't really matter what time of year it is. The other days it's usually eggs.

I've had "proper" cooked porridge twice this week (the other two days I was away and cooked breakfasts were available  :-[).  Like hellymedic, I eat rolled oats raw (with fruit juice or yoghurt) for breakfast, at least in hte summer.

"Proper" porridge is made with oatmeal, soaked overnight and cooked with a pinch of salt.

Dunno why but this week I have had it 4 times compared to 3 times in 30 odd years, seem to just have taken a fancy to it for some reason.

Scott's oats + milk + micro + jam or honey = yumyum

EDIT: hmm that got me thinking, what else is good in/with porridge ?

I have porridge before most serious cycle rides, it's great

I usually make it with a mix of muesli and porridge oats for special yummyness....and have it really thick - stand the spoon up thick  ;)

I have porridge for breakfast just about every day, whatever the time of year (unless I'm away from a microwave).
Usually made with oats, soya milk, sliced bananas, raisins and a spoon of blackstrap molasses.
Other dried fruit is also good, apricots etc - this week I've been adding dried cranberries. And sometimes adding a bit of cinnamon or (freshly grated) ginger.

One of the best adverts for porridge that I can think of is chess player Victor Korchnoi. He survived the siege of Leningrad but, understandably, was pretty thin at the end of it. He resolved to eat porridge every day thereafter to build himself up. He was one of the best players not to win the World Championship, losing in three finals, but he won the USSR and European Championships quite a few times. Now, aged 77, he is the oldest active GM and is playing only slightly below his peak FIDE rating of 1979.

1) Salt
2) Herrings
3) Whisky
It is simpler than it looks.

I had one of those eureka moments whilst bivvying last weekend.

When camping I usually just soak the oats in cold water and throw in raisins, etc., etc., etc, (whatever I have usually in the pack).  I made a brew first (unusual for me) so I put extra water in and tipped the hot water over the oats.   After soaking for the normal five minutes or so it was really really good.

Nothing beats in my view hot porridge in the pan made with milk but when camping some compromises have to be made  ;D

Unusually, I didn't have porridge this morning.  Not sure why, just didn't.

Tomorrow, mind... ;D

I got porridge made for me this morning

I solve that problem by adding milk powder to the oats when I go trekking.  OK, so it isn't proper milk but it's a damn site better than just having water & oats.  Adding dried fruit to the mixture helps too.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

I did that for touring and camping, weighing out individual portions of oats, raisins and skimmed milk powder into Zip-Loc bags.

Put into bowl/mug and add boiling water at campsite or Travelodge.

Ok, so I'm a late porridge developer ...  ;)

I wanna go bivvying again now this weekend just so I can try it.   ;D

While camping, I became so used to porridge with water and sugar that I often don't bother with milk.  Pour oats into bowl, add sugar, add boiling water from the kettle.  Instant breakfast.

Can I confess to the sin of using Quaker's Oat-So-Simple when camping?   :-[
