WARNING- This thread was originally for the 2019 Epiphany Extravaganza, we’re recycling threads, how environmental!
Ideas have been discussed already. Some are practical, others ambitious, a few downright dangerous :o
But before getting too carried away shouldn't we agree a date? How about Saturday 5th January '19 flowing seamlessly into Sunday 6th?
-
Ok
-
Which venue this year? Will there be a pre-ride? Will it involve pavés? Can we dig a hole for the Lynx to repeat his acrobatic manoeuvre?

Easy tiger, you're getting ahead of yourself! Much detail still has to be finalised but I think it's safe to confirm that The Compasses, LG will be where we end up on Saturday evening.

We could move to the following weekend.

Noted, I have started a Pole, he's called Jakub which was the most popular name for newly born Polish boy babies in 2010, Google says so.

According to Google, Epiphany 2019 is actually Sunday 6th.

Funnily enough, being the 12th day after Christmas, it always falls on the 6th January!

I've voted for the later weekend for no reason other than Jibbers said he couldn't make the earlier one.
After a VERY lazy end to a VERY lazy year I need to get back into things (and it's not starting too well) so a January Jolly would be great....I might even camp!

Why is there no option for both weekends ???

Why is there no option for both weekends ???
I thought that as well. Decided a non vote was essentially the same. I don’t mind either option, but makes sense to wait for jibbers, although that probably moves us closer to Chinese New Year. New theme?

Yep, 2nd epiphany theme could be based on 12 Chinese zodiac animal signs, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, pig. Each rider to wear compulsory animal outfit by proxy vote. I will be putting on a bathrobe and turning up as a native Bruce Lee. No front battery lights allowed for night riding, just candle lit lanterns...those who make it to final venue without crashing into a hedge should count themselves lucky.

Perhaps it could be an annual event? ???

Musky reindeer?
Why not? Musky reindeer would count for 13th animal sign/months if your follow the Ethiopian calender...
Better still, how about a Burns night theme - only scotch spirits energy drinks ( no ales), tarten kilt dress code and reciting of Scottish poems until the Angus cows come home
-
....and substituting pickled eggs for Haggis for indications?
-
I’m not sure I like the way a tried and tested formula is being messed with!
-
If we go with the Chinese New Year replacement we could of course do Century Eggs...they make pickled eggs seem like sweets!
EDIT: They taste OK once you get them past your nose though!

OK, yesterday evening stuff as agreed as follows...
1. The date is confirmed as Saturday 5th January running into Sunday 6th. jibers can now make it - hooray!
2. We're NOT having karaoke, but then again :demon:
3. We ARE celebrating the happy union of Jem and 'fandango but doing the whole wedding thing all in one day from stag / hen night to wedding reception (happy couple then retire to tent for shagging - remember to keep the noise down!)
Other stuff may have been agreed but I can't remember what it was.

Yep, just checked, I land on 3rd so that's OK for me..
I think item 4 was BYOC for the after party (Guest list, RSVP GenSec/Chief Fire Officer)

I fly back on 4th so I’m sure I’ll be around for at least part of the day.

Excellent....I'll book in a few days of Gout Inflicted absence for the following week ;D I shall actually be camping this year....and brining my Trangia not the cooker in a suitcase!

You might, but more than made up for by the increased difficulty rating, I'd have thought. Similar to attempting a triple rather than double somersault in a diving competition.
-
I think we can safely say tippers will win the brew off if he manages a triple somersault dive into his Trangia pan.
-
Right then my lovelies, listen up...
I have been in touch with Dee at The Compasses and booked the Green Room, camping is booked too I have also booked a room for The Current Mrs R, there seem to be a few left and are reasonably priced.
Does anyone have any thoughts on where we might go at lunchtime?
EDIT: perhaps we should check out The Chequers at Roxwell on Wednesday evening? Or what about The Three Elms at Chiggers?
-
Annoyingly Junior 2 has her birthday on Epiphany, and it looks like its going to be that way EVERY YEAR!
So whilst I'm likely to manage a pass out of the night of the 5th, I'll probably need to make like a pumpkin around midnight.

Fear not, the tried and trusted Epiphany concept allows for folks to dip and out as REAL LIFE allows. The important fing is you’re there for as much as you can manage!

If you are in the Green Room, is there a piano?
It is in the diary. Is it intended that we meet early in the morning at the Witham Wetherspoons, do a lot of cycling somewhere, and end up at the Compasses late on? If so, I may join later in the day. I would need to find a way of getting home well after dark and it might be politic to turn up later in the car (provided I've got my driving licence by then... ::-) )
-

Don't forget OD is organising, so that bit is unlikely ;D
-
If you are in the Green Room, is there a piano?
The piano is in the other room - the one on the left that used to have the 1950s juke box, if anyone can remember that far back. #2 has been known to play it, once most drinkers have dispersed ...
-
Wow, could you rustle up some sort of portable keyboard?
-
Oh, and if a portable keyboard can be rustled we’ll have no smart arse remarks about Wow and his organ >:(. Remember this is a family show.

I have news of developments...
Yesterday evening the Mid-Essex Mid-Week Nocturnal Series descended on The Chequers, Roxwell. We made quite an impression and you can read ted's write up HERE (post 3317) (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=94449.3300).
Anyhow, quite unbelievably, the landlord and landlady are keen for us to return so I broached the subject of Epiphany lunch. It looks like we could have exclusive use of the pub  and I am now liaising with Maria the landlady to firm up arrangements - I will keep you posted.
TTFN :-*
-
EXCITING NEWS!!!
-
There's is every chance that The Musky Reindeer Pelt of Destiny (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=66355.0) lives again  Any volunteers to wear at The Epiphany Do?
PS, I will update the thread.

Isn't half the fun scaring the hell out of the 'normal' people? Although it worries me that this might lead to a level of OD antics that we have never before seen....if he needs to scare us instead! ;D

I will check on the Secret control.....I suspect there might be a year off though as it was more difficult to convince last year....I shall let you know once I have assessed the BP cost!
You remember me, that's nice! As a reward for riding the 3 R's the other week I got Gout in my Elbow....who would ever have thought that was possible.....anyway...back to health and now time to start tackling the fitness.

I camped there with our lot a few years back. OS map shows it as a public footpath. Here's the sign as well (https://goo.gl/maps/Rn28zrr6PML2). Which means you can go down it, as long as no cycling is involved. Which has already been discussed:

COR possibility ... Colley Bridge Lane - decent gravel track for about a mile between Cooksmill and Radley Greens, with an [almost] rideable ford, if you want a challenge [there is a footbridge].
I think the bridleway from Roxwell A1060 through to Chignall St James is a bit rough, once you're off the concrete farm road, but I haven't been that way for ages. Knobbly tyres may be fitted ...
-
I think I should also offer a COR option.

Given we'd be going down the steepest section in the intended direction I'd be happy with the Cooksmill by-way option (Bonus Alpacas at the Radley Green end as well  )
Not too keen on the bridleway - it's quite rough and I might be on my clown bike...

So with the date fast approaching I guess I better request some votes for the MEMWNS Epiphany Trophy I could of course award it to myself but where would be the fun in that.
So if you please, drop me a PM and let me know you nominations for this coming presentation. A small not about why wouldn't go amiss but if you don't fancy revealing the reasons for your vote I am sure I can make something up for the awardeeeeee....

Proposed lunch menu from The Chequers at Roxwell, what do we think...?
[Gets my vote  ]
Starter
Prawn Cocktail
or
Home-made vegetable soup
Main
Fish Pie or Cottage Pie
Served with seasonal fresh vegetables
or
Vegetarian chilli with rice
Dessert
Warm pudding (eg.treacle/choc/jam) with custard
or
Trifle
This would be at a cost of £19.95 per person.
We hope that this is to your liking. We will most likely have the local guest ales (Ridley’s Rite and 1555) plus the Greene King IPA on draught at the time, but if this changes before then, we will let you know.
If there are any particular wines you would like available, we will do our best to get them in stock for you too.

OK folks, please listen up, I need some input from you...
Via the medium that is interpretive dance and / or mime private messaging (to save lots of boring posts clogging up this thread) I need to know...
1. Are you coming for lunch at The Chequers, Roxwell?
2. Which of the menu options mentioned above would you like?
Please note... There isn't an option to just have one course and pay less. The £19.95 charge doesn't just cover a goodly amount of grub, it also covers the cost of the venue and staffing etc. Basically we have our own private pub (what's the worst...?) :o If anyone has a fundamental issue with this arrangement please PM me.
Thanking you all in advance and I look forward to a tidal wave of PMs

I can report this is going very well. I have had lunch responses from:
Me
tippers
jibers
Jem
The bloke she knocks around with (Jem did the typing)
psyclist
JenM
Nick's Nik
EDIT... The Current Mrs R
Bear in mind we have a whole pub to fill so it would be lovely to hear from the rest of you.
Much obliged.

I hope you’ve retained the services of the resident quiz master.
And i’d like to lodge a formal complaint about names which are too similar ... Jem and JenM. Very confusing. At least Nick’s Nik has sought to distinguish himself

Actually, a pub quiz isn't a bad idea. Well volunteered, you can organise the questions, we will expect a performance like Smithy off Gavin and Stacey. As a reward for volunteering we will let you off dressing up as a reindeer. And, before you moan, consider yourself a lucky chappie as yesterday evening jibers suggested we drug you before wrestling you into The Pelt. Apparently Andy C33333333 has some useful chemicals in his killing kit :o
-
I’ve never seen Gavin and Stacey so I cannot hope to emulate Smithy, but I do know some terribly hard Audax questions that have defeated the panel previously.

What’s my time window for the quiz ... I would propose 2 rounds (cycling knowledge and general knowledge) and a surprise component. Teams of 3. To be run once people are settled but before food (so people would need to be sat in their team, not around a big table). Will also need a prize.
-
So the quiz will be at lunchtime right?
I think we'll need to do the quiz after lunch as I imagine the pub will want to get us fed not long after we arrive which I anticipate will be between 12:30 and 1pm. Bear in mind we have the pub all afternoon so there'll be plenty of time.

I sympathise with Jibers...
In SA we have Breakfast, lunch and dinner - in that order. Simple.
Here I've had to get my head around supper vs dinner and then work out if dinner is actually lunch or the evening meal and if supper is actually dinner in which case what happens to lunch if supper is dinner and dinner is lunch.
And then there's tea.
Tea can be anything from tea - as in a simple cup of - to supper - (or is it dinner?) and if it is dinner, is it actually lunch? Just today I had to ask Sister Carol what time tea time was to determine whether he meant afternoon or evening.
For crying out loud!!!
-
Exactly, though for me, it is quite simple...
Dinner time = 12:00 noon
Tea time = 17:00 to 18:30
Afternoon tea, 15:00ish
Evening dinner 19:30 onwards
Historically, luncheon was the meal taken after breakfast, could have been a 10:00 break meal or whatever.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunch
Dinner referred to a main meal, however historically at noon.

Just today I had to ask Sister Carol what time tea time was to determine whether he meant afternoon or evening.
For crying out loud!!!
With your ravenous appetite tea time will probably occur this afternoon and this evening ;)

Wowbagger is your expert in these matters. A man who is reputed to effortlessly fit at least 8 meals into a day's cycling, must know what each sitting should be called.
Mind you he's slimming world slimmer of the month, so perhaps he's cutting back on gustatory delights.

I heard you perfectly well the first time.
The only way you can reasonably fit 8 meals into a single bike ride is to make sure that they have vague names. That means that should you bump into Ted the Shred and he asks, as is his Caledonian wont, "Ye'll have had yer tea...?" you can honestly answer "NO!".
-
With all this talk of food and meals can I remind you to let me know what you’d like to eat at Epiphany lunch. I have heard from most of you and it looks like we’ll have a record turnout but there’s room for more, remember we have an entire pub to fill!

Sorry for nagging Wow, my finger is too big for my phone screen and seems to get fatter the more sherry I drink, hic.
Looking forward to seeing you on Epiphany.

Just as well. I had about 3000 calories to replace after the Soggy Santa but now you can add to that the energy expended peeling 21 potatoes and peeling and crossing 84 sprouts - and whatever else you have planned for me this evening.

Can I just remind you this is a family show and you should keep it clean :-X

Top banana! Got your PM, thanks.
You asked about timings, let’s keep it simples, I think we’ll start to assemble at Witham ‘spoons for 8:30 / 9am. Bar opens at 9, then we’ll just let fings unfold.

How can 'no' be ambiguous? We didn't vote ... but then if the route includes COR there will always be folks finding an alternative, so perhaps it doesn't matter either way?

Hi all
I can't make the full Epiphany Extravaganza experience as I'd already planned on a DIY 200 on Saturday for my January RRtY. However, I've plotted a route to arrive at Roxwell at the 130 km point, so I will see you all for lunch.

What's on the agenda after Roxwell? I assume we will end up at Spiritual PH in Little Green with formal evening wear code? Just wondering, as I will need to consider forward planning whether to bring camping gear for overnight stop.
-
Disturbing lack of votes for the award given the number who are attending - you don't have to be there all day to cast a vote! :)

Your assumptions are correct and bring a tent!

No rush :-)
Also, can you confirm there will be a PA available? One of the quiz rounds won’t work very well without a means to project sound, but I can work around it.

I am, naturally.
(Note that that is "naturally", not "naturistically".)

I've still not made a decision on camping - whilst I have found my very old tent etc I am running out of time to get it sorted out (check for holes and how to put it up).
I've rulled out the clown bike so will be recommissioning the CdF which will require me to strip the fixed and change tyres plus build up the Jack out of the bike bike box so I can liberate the tools in there.... I forsee a very very busy Friday inbetween meetings today!
Did we agree on who is providing glassware for the after party?
-
Is there a rough schedule and route? Route could determine which bike I drag out.
I am assuming gathering at Witham spoons sometime in the morning for breakfast and beer (open for breakfast from 8:00, serve beer from 9:00).

I have a batch of disposable plastic champagne coupes. Can't remember if I got 12 or 24.

Those are admirable assumptions but group leader hasn't proposed any firmness to his vague plans, yet. You'd have thought he'd had plenty of time to itemise everything in great detail while sitting in his mobile shed the last few days ::-)
-
I'm aiming for the Wetherspoons in Witham 0830-0900.
If this is all some form of complex wind-up just to get me cycle in public in that bloody reindeer outfit I shall be a teeny bit annoyed. And might have to write a letter.

Right then, here's the proposed plan for Epiphany 2019 with Bonus Nuptials...
Hen / stag night / breakfast and beer (other forms of refreshment are available)
Assemble at Witham 'spoons between 0830 and 0900hrs.
Grand depart
0930hrs(ish) leave and follow THIS ROUTE (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28931061?beta=false). There are plenty of opportunities to turn left and we might even ride past some pubs what are open.
Lunch and wedding ceremony
I have told The Chequers that we should arrive between 1230 to 1300hrs. As well as nuptials (officiated by Tomsk) we have psyclist's pub quiz
Dinner and wedding breakfast
I think I booked the Green Room at The Spiritual Home from 1830hrs. During the course of the happy couple's wedding reception we have The Prize Giving officiated by jibers and a Musical Interlude
After Party
I have no idea what's going to happen at the After Party and I'd be surprised if anyone else has a clue either ;D
Any questions?

COR everywhere - even within the first mile :D
Easily avoided, except for the Mashbury bit after lunch, which I think is a decent surface

There might be a lack of award giving if there isn't a a few more votes! so far there are 4 candidates for it across 4 peeps who have let me know... so I guess a bit of name and shame to get some clearer front running votes....
Of those who haven't let me know yet are:
tippers
Jem
sister Carlos
psyclist
JenM
Nick's Nik
The Current Mrs R
Oaky
Joss
GreySheep
AndyC3333333333333333

Someone will be along with photos of The Un-Civil Ceremony of the Year. As the Senile Senior Elder I was busy officiating.

The Musky Reindeer Pelt of Destiny thoroughly enjoyed itself until it had to make like Cinderella rather earlier that it would have liked. Hope the After-Party went with a swing. And less of that god-awful kazoo business.

Reindeer are allergic to Kazoo "music". Who knew?

I’m eagerly waiting for The Bard’s write up!

BTW, sorry I didn’t make the After Party but 14 hours of being a non-stop dick had taken its toll. I will go into training during 2019 so I have more stamina next time.

Only 14 hours?!?!?!? Surely you mean at least 14 years?
But seriously, thank you for all your effort and enthusiasm in arranging an unforgettable experience, both myself and JEM enjoyed ourselves immensely. X

I too would like to extend my appreciation to the Acme Entertainment Team organised by Production Director OD, to Game Host Psyclist for the mastermind pub quiz, Happy Couple Jem & Carlos on the wedding ceremony, and Kazoo Musicians Oaky & Jibers for their talented duet performances, and to Comedian Writer Ted for After Party finale.
It would be a tough ask to better this for next year. Must remember to contribute with a bottle of champers for the after party next time.

I still have an idea for the 2018 event which never got used cos I was poorly. Let’s hope I can still remember it in 12 months!

I was running fashionably late as usual for the pre-Epiphany After Party festivities so I decided to intercept the famous Witham peloton en route. What I should have done was ride back along the actual route rather than the one I thought they would follow  I must have missed them by yards (or perhaps they saw me and hid).
Who knows what fun they enjoyed on their ride to the Chequers at Roxwell. For my part, I had a thoroughly pleasant trip over made all the more enjoyable when I found some COR leading from Chignal St James to the Roxwell Road. It was fairly rough going in parts and I picked up a huge thorn in my front tyre (no problem with tubeless but I didn't dare remove it until I got home yesterday).
I arrived at the Chequers to find Oaky and Mr and Mrs Bill Bailey standing around looking cold. Apparently they had turned left but the pub wasn't ready for them. We were soon admitted by the friendly landlord and the tasting began. The Chequers was offering Bishop Nick's Ridleys Rite and 1555. Both were in excellent order and, in fact, the Ridleys Rite was declared the Quaffers' Choice even before we sampled the delights of the Spiritual Home's offerings.
By the time the main peloton arrived, the fire was going well and we were warming up nicely.
Hotblack, the Hustler, the Strangler, Hernan Cortes, Nim (making a winter DIY 200 that bit harder by stopping with us for a few hours), Joergen, Sue, Martin, Fhoot, Bhoot, JenM, Stanners Kiwi and the two Stannettes, Psyclist, TCMR, Huggy's consort, Huggy junior, Mrs Jiber and Josser formed the remainder of the guests.
More importantly, the Musky Pelt of Destiny, as worn by NikNack, was there. Even more importantly, we had the uncivil partnership ceremony party of Tomsk (presiding), OD (Matron of dishonour), Huggy (best man) and the Happy Couple (Carlos and Jem).
Oaky declared early on that this was the time when high jinks and nonsense were to be tolerated, the dinner at the Spiritual Home being a more formal and sombre occasion. He was right about the first part at least.
The food all seemed to be good and even Joergen's complex dietary requirements seemed to be satisfied (summarised as lots of food but no mushrooms, green vegetables or salad but plenty of brown sauce and melted cheese).
You could feel the excitement in the room building towards the uncivil partnership ceremony.
Before we knew it, Tomsk was standing at the raised ceremony section and Bill Bailey was escorting Jem down the aisle while people tried to hum the wedding march. In front of Tomsk, a very nervous Carlos was being reassured by the ever-attentive Huggy and OD was doing something that he must have thought was helpful - if careening around in a pink wig making excited noises can ever be helpful. Tomsk led a lovely ceremony full of wise words, thoughtful counsel and stuff about Kebabs and bike cleaning. Josser and I are still researching whether or not Tomsk has the actual powers vested in him to make the ceremony legal, our current view is a tentative yes.
I wasn't party to OD's meticulous planning of this event so I can only assume that he was concerned about filling in the time gap between the end of the ceremony and the pub's regulars banging on the door at 5pm while they waited for the pub to re-open when he asked Psyclist if he could run a four hour pub quiz marathon. If that was the brief then it was fulfilled to perfection. No sooner had Psyclist started the final round of his Pointless-inspired head to head finale than the landlord was begging us to leave so that he could let the unhappy regulars in through the door. What the quiz lacked in brevity it made up for in the window to the world that is Psyclist's music collection. If Middle of the Road has a centreline then Psyclist's eight track tape deck is perched right on top of that line. I am not saying the music round, the 11 rounds we had on things that happened in the '70s or the specialist rounds on Rising Damp and on the life of Phil Collins had anything to do with the fact that the two teams in the final had the oldest average age but I will leave you to draw your own conclusions.
Imagine my surprise when we left the pub and the peloton turned on to the very COR that I had found on the way there. Not only that but we managed to go down the private bit necessitating scaling a five bar gate to rejoin the actual right of way. Fortunately there were just enough of us to lift Fred over the gate after removing a couple of panniers (OD had brought full panniers to keep up the pretence that he had ever intended to camp).
The arrival at the Spiritual Home always marks an important point in the pre-Epiphany After Party festivities for it is at that point that we find out who is taking it seriously. The most serious group are the overnight campers. Slightly less serious but nevertheless committed are the overnight B&B stayers. While the campers are trying to tie their bow ties in a dark tent, the other overnighters are taking a second shower just because they can. Meanwhile everyone else is tucking into their Huffers and wondering why it is taking the serious people so long. The outlier to these groupings is Joergen who has a team car that allows him to attend events, take full advantage of everything on offer and then go back to his own bed.
This year's campers were myself, Oaky and the Strangler. The other overnighters were Mr and Mrs Bailey, the Happy Couple and OD who seemed not to need those panniers full of camping equipment after all.
The highlight of this part of the evening is normally the presentation of The Trophy but this year we had the cake cutting and the first dance to enjoy as well. The Trophy itself was awarded to Jem who in another step forward for MEMWNS diversity becomes only the second ex-colonial to win it.
As I said earlier, I was not involved in OD's meticulous planning of this event so I can only imagine what was going through his demented mind when Oaky said "I've got a good idea for the pre-Epiphany After Party dinner musical interlude". What clearly wasn't going through his mind but should have been was "must resist at all costs". Thus it was that a packet of Kazoos was distributed amongst our merry throng and that OD conducted the group through a range of numbers. Each of them had precise cues as to when the kazoo playing should begin and OD had further instructions on pitch, loudness and tempo but within one bar they all sounded like the same cacophony of random feedback. It was only by grace of the fact that Josser was heartily joining in that we weren't asked to leave immediately. As it was, our end of the bar was soon cleared.
That was enough for everyone. That is for everyone except the Kazoo Two. Oaky and Joergen stockpiled as many kazoos as they could find and treated us to what seemed like a fortnight of trying to play Nellie the Elephant in the style of a tone deaf person who had never heard the song before. Whenever Mrs Jiber approached Joergen and demanded that he hand over his kazoo, he would look slightly abashed before grinning like a naughty schoolboy and dragging another one out of his male stripper ensemble. We always lose the less-dedicated attendees at some point after dinner but never so early as this time. Those of us who suffered the full Kazoo Two experience will probably be exonerated from all charges when we explain to the judge why it was that we rammed a kazoo up some poor unsuspecting person's backside.
In our usual transition, Oaky and I moved on to fine wine after the Loyal Toast but not until after sampling Wibblers' Spiced Porter. A porter that tastes of cloves and cold mulled wine might be just the ticket on a cold winter's evening after they have finished whatever it is that people with no sense of taste or smell get up to but not so much after a long day on beer and bikes.
With the departure of the last of the amateurs and with the Baileys and OD taking an early night (possibly separately), it was time for the real purpose of the day to begin - the Epiphany After Party. This year Oaky and I had given strict instructions - dress to impress and PBAB. Clearly the Happy Couple and the Strangler consider themselves above trifles like rules but they were made welcome nevertheless. Mrs Jiber thoughtfully provided what were apparently high tech warming solutions with authentic ethnic colourways and not foil backed tartan travel blankets as I had thought so we were nice and cosy as we sat down and commenced our champagne sampling. This year's entries came from Aldi, Lidl and Tesco and all three were excellent. The tasting was helped considerably by Oaky's choice of plastic coupes - last year's glass flutes had proved particularly challenging when they started sliding off the frozen table top. The centrepiece of the After Party is always the stereo joke. We only just managed it this year before Oaky lost the power of speech and became reduced to the odd squeak on his kazoo. Beyond those snippets I can say no more, the first rule of the After Party is that we never talk about the After Party. Actually, that is the third rule behind the dress code and not "forgetting" to bring a bottle. Actually it is at least the fifth rule with don't fall backwards off the picnic table and no farting if it can be detected in an outdoor environment coming ahead of it as well.
After a mild night under canvas, it was time for the most serious part of the whole event - the brew off. I am sorry to relate that this year's event was marred by series of atrocities the likes of which I hope never to see repeated. For starters, I distinctly heard the removal of Oaky's Trangia strap when he retired to bed in clear contravention of rule 6.4(iii). That was nothing compared to the Strangler though. I still find it hard to believe much less talk about but he used a gas-powered MSR stove to make his tea. As if that wasn't bad enough, he didn't even make tea, he made some sort of hot fruit thing that meant leaving a bag of coloured leaves in the water as he boiled it. The final straw was down to my own school boy error. Everybody knows that you never leave your stove unattended during a brew off. It should have been no surprise therefore when I returned from a quick comfort break to find my stove no longer lit and Oaky standing by whistling innocently. Our kettles still boiled at the same time so I declared it a dishonourable draw - the Strangler having been disqualified on several grounds already.
Thank you to OD, his quizmaster, the Happy Couple, the Musky Pelt and everyone else who made it such fun. I except the Kazoo Two from any gratitude or praise, may their Kazoos burn in the big fire.

That wasn't the ear bashing, head mashing racket we were hearing from the Kazoo Two on Saturday.
-
Completely independently, it occurred to me sometime on the ride back to Witham that "Kazoo Two" (although probably spelled "KazU2") would make an excellent name for a duet performing U2 covers. ("Kazoogoogoo" also has possibilities, but far less recognisable material.)
-
Perhaps we should form a MEMWNS tribute band?
-
I forsee the band having more members than the audience.
-

You foresee an audience?
-
Maybe a hungry, deaf dog sniffing for crumbs on the corpulent couple.
-
I’m not sure we should be encouraging them. This is the first time one of my good ideas has backfired so comprehensively.
-
It was a great day out, so well organised OD. There were multiple facets to the day, and it allowed an extended time for socialising.
I would suggest nothing ‘musical’ is tried in the Compasses in future, but I wouldn’t let that detract from the day you’ve masterfully put together.
-
If only we could have had some time during the day at a private venue - a pub for instance. That would have been perfect for the musical interlude. No, strike that, a private venue for the Kazoo Two somewhere remote and outdoors would have been ideal.

As hinted, I am throwing my hat in the ring as organiser of this year's Epiphany Extravaganza.
I have the lunch venue arranged so all I need now are a route and an evening venue.
If only we knew a landlord of a suitable pub...
The other thing I will need is a good idea of numbers for the lunch.
-
Who’s getting married? Or perhaps Tomsk could renew the martial vows of any interested parties.
Well done for volunteering by the way :-*

I’ll be there. Are going to start a new thread or should I rename this one?
-
You can re-name this one.
-
Done.

What a marvel you are, it will be so good to have you back...
-
What a marvel you are, it will be so good to have you back...
Hmmm...
-
ted, is the Chelmsford Club your gentlemens’ club?
-
It is but it is now open to all sexes.
We will be the only people there and will have use of the bar, dining room and club generally.
-
Can you rename the thread again, please, to the "Mid-Essex YACF Pre-Epiphany Extravaganza (Saturday 4th January 2020)?
The first day of Epiphany next year is 6th January.
HTH! O:-)
Edit: then you could abbreviate it to the Mid-Essex YACF PEE".
-
It is but it is now open to all sexes.
We will be the only people there and will have use of the bar, dining room and club generally.
Oh. So there won’t be an opportunity for me to perform my pole dancing routine?

You must have a very strong pole!
-
Can I book the room we had last year for this event?
In other words are we finishing at the same place?
-
I have an update.
After some weeks of negotiation with our landlord, I have managed to secure our usual venue at the Spiritual Home for the evening part of our Epiphany celebration.
What's more, I have even been able to lift the ban on the Kazoo Two but only on condition that there are no musical instruments of any kind.
Camping will be available in the Epiphany Field and the landlord may still have some rooms available for those of a more sensitive disposition.
Musical instruments and singing will be permitted, in fact positively encouraged at our lunchtime venue.
I know it isn't the Mid-Essex way to be organised but can people start letting me know if they are coming for lunch as i need to ensure we have the correct catering and, more importantly, enough beer to drink.
-
I plan to be there!

Is there a theme for this year, clown bikes?

Yes please.
Your first wedding anniversary!
Unbelievably yes, still 2 months to go, so don't count your chickens.
-
Is there a theme for this year, clown bikes?
It has only been mentioned, but not confirmed that JEM would consider bringing along her 'speciality' trike; and that each Epiphany arrival must do a compulsory stint on it, or lots could be drawn to find the lucky person having the joy to appreciate a fine machine for the whole day. 8)
Aiming to attend again.
-
If we’re going to do Epiphany on inappropriate bikes I could always throw a leg over Penelope.
-
I'm aiming to be there too - if that changes, I'll let you know ASAP

First anniversary celebration - or divorce depending on how he plays his cards ;D - either way I'll be there.

Who is going to wear The Musky Reindeer Pelt of Destiny???
-
Who is going to wear The Musky Reindeer Pelt of Destiny???
Don’t worry, Jem has volunteered! Our first female wearer! Many ticks in the inclusive boxes!
-
Many ticks in the inclusive boxes!
And many more ticks in the pelt itself!
I have visitors staying on 4th, so not sure I can make it this time.
-
Invent a mystery illness at the 11th hour and put them off. A tick infestation?
-
I'm no a confirmed "no" - similarly family visitors, the type that think outdoor activities should be limited to walks to shops. Ugh.
Does mean I need to find a way to handover the tick-infested, smelly, stuck-inside-a-welly-for-a-year ball of matted fur the newly-washed, sweet-smelling Pelt of Destiny though.
-
Is it too late to opt in on this?
-
Deano, it is never to late. Good to have you on board.

Great, thanks! See you all on the 4th :).

I know I have been MIA for some time....this whole job hunting thing is a pain in the arse and having invoked austerity at home I have been trying to behave myself and not spend money on beer.....but I will be out for this...and I plan to camp as well!

I've talked to Ted and he says I can come, so I am. Camping as well

Yes, Flatbar had forgotten that the wearers of the Musky Pelt are entitled to various special privileges. He won't tell me what they all are however, they remain a closely guarded secret between the Wearers.

Keep those confirmations coming and remember, all are welcome to join for Breakfast at Spoons, Lunch at the Chelmsford Club or dinner at the Spiritual Home.
The Chelmsford Club will be doing a set menu of either Chicken Pie or Black Bean Chilli for £8.95. Do we want starters or pudding as well ? I have also been asked what Ales we would like (they use polypins these days so we can probably have a couple or three).
Final detailed itinerary to follow.
-
Shaping up nicely!
Musky Reindeer Pelt of Destiny update...
The aforementioned Pelt was rescued by Nik's Nick from his family's welly boot bucket and has given it a wash. I have brought it back to Witham and will give it a cursory squirt of Fabreze. Afterwhich I shall contact Jem so we can arrange a date for the Official Handover Ceremony

CBA: :'(
Tomsk
Huggy
Though in a faraway country [ok, Scotland], I'll be with you all in spirit.
-
I think it might be rude not to have starters and pud at ted's Gentleman's Club.
-
Carlos, camping? ;D
-
Looking forward to this, last year was excellent
At the risk of getting shouted down, would it be possible to get a copy of the planned route in advance, and an idea of timings? I'm looking into whether it would be practical to turn it into an RRTY 200k ride with an extended ride out to Witham (obviously weather permitting etc).
I appreciate that not every ride has to be an Audax, and that this probably isn't the most practical idea I've ever had, but the extended negotiations required to secure another full day of cycling in January don't really appeal either :hand:
-
I'm in. Just lunch for me - none of this camping nonsense...
-
I'm in. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
-
I’m in for breakfast, lunch and dinner too.

I will probably go with OD’s “three wise men” approach so we stick roughly together. You can be one of them, perhaps leading the A Peloton. Route to follow.

Of course, I'm not the type who sneaks off to the nearest hotel at the first sign of precipitation, cool temperatures or bears rustling in the woods ;D
How about you psyclist?

Plan A = see you at the Spiritual Home in the evening, possibly with my sister and French husband*.
Plan B = join you for breakfast
Plan C = there isn’t a Plan C
* Quite what they will expect if I told them we were going to meet a group of mainly men that I met on the internet, oh and one person will be dressed as a reindeer!
-
I very much like Plan A possibly combined with Plan B. Everyone is welcome but please inform your sister and BiL that kazoos are still banned (and I still wish to apologise for introducing them in the first place :-[ )
-
Make sure it's the Horlicks he passes you not his "special milk carton"
-
Jem I read plan A as that you have both a sister and you have a husband who is French.
I'm fostering some outside hope of getting along for the evening and even outsider of getting Mr Millard along

I am negotiating a pass for this - but my not be able to make all of it (Mr R’s father is not well and we’re having to make regular trips to the hospital in London).
Can someone PM the locations (I’ve found the Chelmsford Club but am lost by the reference to the Spiritual Home) and I’ll see what I can rustle up?

Excellent, some of us old hands remember the last time you turned up, in fact it was Christmas then not Epiphany. We’ve all grown up a bit in recent years so you’re in for a far more civilised time of it!
The Spiritual Home is The Compasses Inn, Littlely Green, if you need more info let me know. Hope you can make it ;D

Exactly, that's a pathetic challenge in the summer. I don't know how you'll survive the Tour Divide, I really don't.
You'll enjoy camping with us, we can help you with our advice and expertise, it'll toughen you up a bit and it'll help you function outside of your (wussy) comfort zone.👍

Room for another one? Probably breakfast and lunch, not dinner.

Don't forget that OD has, as ever, totaly ballsed up and is organising his epiphany bash before epiphany starts.
I know - why not just be novel and call it a Christmas bash - since you are celebrating it at Chrstmas - the 10th day if my calculations are correct? :P

Did the wise man deliver, or still on route?
Be useful to know details of route, even if draft, to aid logistics planning for the day.
-
The three wise "men" all have the route.
It is 32k from Witham to Chelmsford via Butts Green then 14k to the Compasses.
There is some cycle path COR but mainly laney.
One thing to check then full itinerary will follow...

I don’t think you’re taking the whole Epiphany thing seriously you know!
I shall bring a suitably religious Epiphany bent to the evening shenanigans...
See if you can smash the tarts and vicar thing!
I’ve smashed the vicar’s thing a few times... :o
You can tell us all about it on Saturday evening. How about a slide show?

You're so 1960's OD, what's a slide show?
Anyway, I think I've seen it on the internet already😲

Bale of hay for the reindeer please.
Black bean curry and pudding please.

Sorry for the continued radio silence since hinting I would be coming at the last winter series ride. Unfortunately I have a clash with 'real life' stuff so wont be around, again >:(
-
Do you need any advance warning for camping. Sue to family stuff I'm still between not being able to get there, to coming accross in the eve and returning home that night to camping and leaving early Sunday
I won't be eating there with any of these options

Do we have an "official" course for the do??
-
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.
The lunch list is with the Club now so there is no backing out (26 of us at lunch and a few more joining at different times). Those of you who haven't let me have your menu choices for lunch may end up with what ever is available but there should be plenty.
Please bring cash for lunch as there are no card facilities.
There is a route but only the three wise "men" have it - Bernster, Jiber and Jem. Hopefully that means we can stay together on the ride (perhaps in 3 groups).
Remember the rules for those attending the after party.

I only just remembered to check up on the itinerary etc. so I didn't send any lunch preferences... Happy to eat whatever's left over.
As to routes - roughly how long is the pre-lunch route? I'm seriously concerned about my ability to complete it given current levels of non-fitness. Editted to add: I see from upthread it's ~32km to lunch... I should make that (slowly). Butt's Green for elevenses, indicates that TMNH might conceivably feature, which means I'd better fettle the gears on the camping bike as the lower ones are unobtainable at the moment.

Don't worry, I'll be tail end Charlie / all upper as I'm on clown bike so you'll have company :)
In other news, I've spent 3 pints on a train ticket!

That's a relief...

... although whilst trying to fettle the gears into working on the camping bike, it appears that its problems are more deep seated than that.
I am hoping to still be camping, but will need to find a way to get my camping stuff to/from the Compasses.

How many kazoos do I have to bring?
Depends how many you want to carry within your person for the journey home - insertion by other patrons and staff of the compasses will be a "No Charge" service as a gratefull thankyou for last years musical performances... probably.
-
I wonder if Kazzoo Two will make an appearance?

This was a good day out, nice to catch up with everyone.
Thanks for organising!
-
Thank you all for a most enjoyable night... and for making me so welcome!
-
What a good day out on the bike... I'm still hungover now though - hoping a big curry will sort me out! LOL
-
That was truly epic and no hangover. Thanks ted for organising and everyone else for turning up, you are a splendid bunch of people.
-
Completely agree with the above - really enjoyable day out, made all the better by not trying to turn it into an Audax :)
Thanks to Ted for organising and to everyone for their excellent company - good to hear that everyone appears to have survived the camping too
Lastly, I'm still quite amazed at my artwork award, given how artistically challenged I am - not being able to see what I was drawing was a huge advantage to me I reckon ;D

"Well, I quite like the glove".
Thank you very much to everyone who turned out on Saturday and made Epiphany 2020 such a fun occasion.
The day started (as all great adventures do) in the Witham 'Spoons where we sampled Pricky Back Ochan by Great Newsome and consumed a variety of breakfasts. The group comprised; the Hustler, Hotblack, OD, Psyclist, Grey Sheep, Deano44, Martin, Sue, Fhoot, Bhoot, Jiber, Bobb, Bernster, Oaky, Christophe and Bloomers. Sadly, the Musky Pelt wearer was unable to join us but fortunately the Pelt is very gender fluid so the other half of Jemango was able to take over Jem's duties. Josser didn't make it either but sent his friend Posh Pam along instead. She was a fine figure of a woman and kept us entertained and slightly queasy in equal measure.
We almost managed to leave on time but did manage to coincide with the sun coming out, giving us a lovely winter's day ride across to Butts Green for our morning coffee stop. Here we were joined by the Dutch Wife, the Dutch MiL and Flatbar Steve (who very impressively had ridden there by bicycle). It was a short but convoluted ride into Chelmsford to avoid the Saturday traffic and somehow or other we managed to arrive at exactly the time I had told the staff at the Chelmsford Club to expect us - surely an Epiphany first. We were joined there by TCMR and Mrs Jiber, making us a party of 24.
Those of us on the ale sampled Captain Bob, Winter Wonder and Yellow Snow, all by Mighty Oak. I believe we managed to finish the entire stock of each. Lunch was characterised by an unusually large number of people taking the vegetarian option - a very excellent black bean chilli which helped power us to our next destination. At some point during lunch, the day, as ever when OD is around, started to slip into its own Epiphany madness. I don't know whether to blame the post-prandial taking of snuff or the port, but behaviour was deteriorating at a rapid rate. Fortunately, Psyclist was on hand with his quick quiz (3 rounds instead of last year's 42). Unfortunately, the questions were somewhat challenging. Fortunately, I had TCMR on my team who seemed to know some very obscure stuff about Psyclist's favourite band (S Club 7) and other esoterica. While Pscyclist was busy adding up TCMR and Oaky's correct answers, the rest of us took part in the inaugural Epiphany Art Off. Bernster's abstract interpretation of Jiber, riding a bike, past an alpaca and a garden ornament, earning him the star prize.
There was just time to watch Oaky trying to repair a visitation before we all realised that he was a big boy and there was a pub waiting for us and abandoned him.
Those of us who made it to the Spiritual Home were joined by Regulator. He had to introduce himself to those who didn't know him as OD had prioritised brewing a Horlicks for himself ahead of pitching his tent or, indeed, dressing for dinner. When OD finally joined us, the top table was complete and the formal part of the evening could begin. In Jem's absence, Fandango handed over the coveted trophy (now featuring a revolving elephant's leg kebab cooker) to Hotblack. So confident was Hotblack that he had already set aside something to add to the trophy. Before switching to wine, we sampled Scarlet Macaw by Oakham and Essex Nights by Crouch Vale. With the loyal toast made and ties undone (or in OD's case, unclipped ) ), it was time to settle in for the business end of the day - preparing ourselves for the After Party. Meanwhile the exertion of riding his bike not only to Butts Green but also the Spiritual Home (and at one point quite quickly), had taken its toll on poor old Flatbar who was more Flatline by this point. He soon perked up when OD purchased him a Baileys and ice to sit and admire. It certainly looked better than the spiced sloe gin and prosecco cocktail kit that Oaky purchased for he and me. The prize for most unusual drink however went to the round of Uganda Waragi shots that Posh Pam procured for us. Whether trying to administer it via his right eyeball was the correct call by Oaky is up for debate but it was surprisingly smooth when taken orally. Oaky and I also gave Posh Pam some advice to pass on to Josser about the proposed conversion of the Spiritual Home to Littley Green's first Michelin starred venue - Paxo Towers. Personally, I thought our deconstructed Huffer was a masterstroke but we didn't want to give too much of our intellectual property away before Josser signed up to the full consultancy package. After all, at OakShred Fine Dining Imagineers Inc our ideas are our currency.
The second casualty of the night was Jiber who by this time had taken to holding up a Christmas bauble which he thought had a picture of Oaky on it and taking pictures of different people whilst singing "are you Oarky ?". Needless to say, he didn't last long at the After Party.
The campers (me, OD, Oarky, Flatline, Fandango and Hotblack) were joined at the After Party by Mr and Mrs Jiber (albeit briefly but at least he didn't fall backwards off a picnic table this year), Posh Pam and a mad monk who sounded suspiciously like Regulator. Once poor old Oarky had finally reached his limit (who knew he even had one), there was nothing for it but to retire to our respective tents and begin the visualisation process for executing a successful brew off come morning.
In the event, the brew off was a bit of an anti-climax. I had finished my first cup of tea and was cooking up a pre-breakfast bacon roll by the time Oarky had even woken up. The others were either disqualified (OD - pre-brewing, Fandango - non-compliant stove) or didn't even manage to bring a stove (Flatline and Hotblack).
Leaving OD to his four course Trangia extravaganza and Fandango to his foul-smelling Shroomdogs, the rest of us took the civilised option and joined Regulator for a full cooked breakfast in doors. As the drizzle fell, we supped our pots of tea and thought how glad we were not to be cooking in a beer garden.
I am looking forward to Epiphany 2021 already. Thank you again to everyone.
-
Well done ted! The write up was almost as good as the actual event!
-
Good write up.
Jiber and me stayed to help Oaky, just for the record.
It was a real treat to get in the Chelmsford Club and I enjoyed your summary of the history. A great day out and lovely to catch up again.

I love the way josser used to be quite shy and didn’t really engage with us. And now look at him :o I like to think we’ve helped him come out of his shell and become the josser he clearly always wanted to be. We’re proud of you mate :-*

I’m not really shy, just a little misanthropic :demon:
Plus, I have to hide my innate twatishness which often comes out after a couple of drinks...
And I got the quote wrong, it was Groucho Marx who said “ I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member“, not Oscar Wilde.

You are a happy soul with a drink in you and that is the best type of drinking companion.
I was too polite to mention the Oscar Wilde thing. It's not your fault you weren't able to attend a decent school.

Oh is that what it's called! I've always thought my affliction must have a name and now I know - thanks! Do you think we should form a self help group?

Fair enough, we could form the Innate Twatishness Association of the UK and fund raise to find a cure. I suggest we start with a jumble sale. Then perhaps we can do a pub quiz, I think we know some folks who could help with that.
