I take it this refers to Murray/Wawrinka.

Wawrinka has always given Murray problems, and Murray's form hasn't been there since Wimbledon. I'm not particularly surprised by this result.

A few months ago there was talk about the no. 1 ranking.

Look here: http://live-tennis.eu/forecast_atp_ranking

Now Murray's 3rd spot and under pressure from Ferrer in 4th. How quickly things turn around.

If you don't defend ranking points, that's what happens. Murray used to be in the top 4 on the back of quite a few 'minor' tournaments won. Then he was second on the back of two Grand Slams, giving him 4,000.

He's won fewer minor ones this year as he's been injured/resting. You need to get to Semis or Finals of majors - he's got 360 for the US Open, as against 2,000 last year. Looks like he got 750 for the Olympics too. So that's 2,000 dropped in a few weeks.

Was doing a recovery session on the turbo while watching. Heart rate all over the place. Up to 145 during some of the long rallies.

Murray forces a 5th set. I did not see that happening after losing the first two.

And back down to three in the world, which is unfortunate because it means he could end up having to play Novak in the semis of the US Open.

He's got to beat him to win, in all probability, so does it matter at what point it happens?

The boy's done well, a title and a semi final in the two Masters series tournaments. Winning both has always seemed a big ask.
