With the approval and encouragement of 'Teh Mannidgement' this thread is to showcase some of the work done in the shop for forum members and non-members alike.
This is emphatically NOT a 'Bikes For Sale' thread, most of the pictures are several months old. Anything I want to offer for sale will be in the Classifieds. It's a little self indulgent but hey, sue me!

Somewhere around a 52-54 as I am 5'9" with 30" leg. Looking for something to do family pootling with flat pedals and the possibility of a rack to carry shopping etc.

Strange question to have to ask, but, since it wasn't me that fitted the tyres, I need to. I recall I wanted to put latex tubes on this, but had trouble finding them. I can't recall if we got any in the end. If not, then I need to be concerned abou thow fast the tyres lose pressure. If so, I shall know I can be more cavalier about p*nct*re risks ;)

Very nice.
Though blue and yellow is a wonderful combination (I may be biased (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_flag)), that needs either a white or dark blue chain ring. Personally, I'd go for white.

The tyres are new but haven't been glued on. They won't be going back anyway because I'm going to build new wheels using the existing hubs so some clinchers will be on order shortly.

The mileometer is toast (the belt drive is missing) and the Mafac brakes may go on *bay and be replaced with something that actually works! Once it's done #1 son has a retro bike he can run around on.

I love the wraparound seatstays on some Carltons. Nostalgia for the bike that kicked off my cycling, I suppose. And I have one now - 1981 (very very late!) converted to fixed.

42 years old? That'd be 1972, then? I'd guessed late 70s from the colour scheme, but the forks do suggest your dating is accurate.

No reason to suspect otherwise. It's also 120mm spacing with over BB cable routing which further makes me think it is original.
For those of us who can remember Raleighs from the 70s it looks exactly like the Carltons we used to slobber over in cycle shops at the time. If it helps I've got another 1980 Carlton on the go - 531, double butted, Campag ends, cut out lugs, chrome fork with sloping crown - but I was saving that for when I get the fork back from the platers ;D

Now running 10 speed Centaur and a Stronglight compact replacing the triple.

Done a load of work with this one over the last 2 years after it was damaged in an RTC including a replacement top tube and a full repaint done by Argos. The owner is extremely happy and very attached to it . . .
ETA. Was sold by a forum member almost 2 years ago. When my customer asked my why he should buy this bike I replied 'because if you don't then I'm going to buy it and sell it to you!' ;D

Phone call this afternoon from John's bikes telling me the bike was ready OMG! I was there by 5.30 and by 6.30 i was out on the road (20 mile test ride) I don't know what to say really, smooth, sharp, balanced and fast. The bike feels so different. I couldn't get off the big ring until i came to Stoneclough up to Ringley Rd dropping down to the small ring accelerating changing back on to the big ring as i had the last part of the climb up out of the saddle as the bike felt alive. In my opinion amazing a real professional job worth knowing John's Bikes in Middleton. The bike never missed a beat!
That's one of the best testimonials I could have.

Amongst the items replaced: Wheels, tyres, tubes, cables, chain & cassette, saddle and mudguards.
After a while I couldn't clean it any more, it was starting to whimper . . .

Very pleased with this build. A customer asked if I could build a bike for his son but the brief was a bit special. A Trek 7.5 frame mated to a Chilli 700c fork fitted the bill nicely for size and reach. I recently asked about building this in 'The Knowledge'

The lad only has a right hand so to keep things simple I sourced a double lever with matching mini V-brakes and kept the transmission simple, too.

A single ring up front with a wide ratio cassette for the rear. (For those who want the details it's a 46 front with 11-32 cassette) SRAM X-5 shifter and derailleur.

A short travel fork and wide riser bars give an upright position, which helps novice or inexperienced riders control the bike.
Had we had the budget then hydraulics and SRAM 3x8 would have featured but we're very happy with the outcome

It is! I have to balance it carefully - it rides a lot better with front panniers if I have him in the seat, but it is very, very comfortable :thumbsup:

A couple of 'works in progress'
First is a flat bar racer/fast commuter. Based on a new but shop soiled Carrera Gryphon frame with a Kinesis fork.

45cm frame with 54cm top tube, 23mm tyres, 8 speed transmission with room for guards and rack mounts. I'm building two of these, one as shown with red bits and one with blue.
This SAB mountain bike is a build for a customer. He's already had a Voodoo I built for his lad and with a bit of luck this is the second of three because his Mrs wants one as well.

The answer is "yes he can" TLD's Paul Donohue was done via John. Top job it is too. Hurry up TLD and grow enough to be able to ride it!

Shortly I shall have a frameset to get sprayed and built up. Do I get you to do the whole job or get the respray done locally and do the build myself? I probably should do it myself as it will be another learning opportunity.

Something of a departure but, just occasionally, you can't turn a bargain down! There's a drum on the rear plus real old school Weinmann cantis, operated by a twin lever on the right. Should I stick with this or add a lever for the stoker to operate the drum and separate the front & rear brakes?

Wheels need rebuilding so I'll be looking for a silver 40-hole rim or two, soon. Would plain gauge 13G stainless spokes do or do I need something heavier?
Also, what do we think about a flat bar conversion? With thumbies instead of the D/T levers?

I don't know about such things but stopping the back wheel sooner than the last pilot did seems a good idea when you look at the stoker's seat-tube. (I'm already wearing my coat.)

I would leave the brake's as a captain operated system. Lower gearing would be worth looking at and a suspension seat post for the stoker would be good to . As for flat bars I personality would appreciate them but the drops are good to . ☺

I've a similar project ongoing.
Beware of potential for some obsolete French standards (bottom bracket, headset, stronglight crank extractor required - apparently later models had Stronglight 99 cranks with standard extractor threads, but still retained French pedal threads).

On our galaxy twin tandem we have captain operated cantis on std drop bar brake levers (on moustache bars) and the rear drum (drag) brake on a stem mounted Suntour power ratchet gear lever on the captain's stem - so the drag brake can be applied -and stay on without having to use a hand to keep it applied, but is under the captain's control.
It was originally a double gear lever so the RH lever is used for the drag brak and the LH lever was removed and a brass bell mounted to the lever boss...

From my experiment with tandem ownership (no, we didn't ride it much) I'd concur that the captain needs the controls. Especially for stuff as critical as brakes.

1954 Royal Enfield 'Mayfly', 531. Rebuilt with a modern fork and a bastardised Stronglight headset, due to non-availability of 60-odd year old components that haven't been manufactured for decades. Sturmey hub brakes with a 5 speed rear, laced onto 23mm repro rims. Alloy but look chromed. Modern bars, stem & seatpost. The saddle is only there to stop you poking your eye out, the customer has a Brooks...

I'm very pleased with this build. The lady was not confident of getting a bike that fitted her, being quite short, an upright position helps with confidence for inexperienced riders. She wanted a rack and full mudguards. I showed her the frame and she liked the colour scheme.

Look past the Carrera decals and you will find decent quality components. Lockout fork, the front end is so tall a suspension fork is the only option, simple cable disc brakes and a pair of disc specific wheels. Schwalbe Tyrago 42mm tyres are a good towpath/tarmac compromise. I'll happily ride cycle paths on slicks but beginners like to see a tread on the tyre.

It did of course belong to Redshift OTP and was fully ovehauled with new tyres, bar tape, saddle & post and got the transmission fettled before going to its new home in Warwickshire.
I know Gus will love riding it because he said it reminded him so much of his first road bike. This makes me very happy.

A whole year since I posted anything here...
I finished this one today. A Bobbin Bramble with 650a wheels conerted to FWD e-bike. As Polar Bear has pointed out elsewhere these aren't the easiest wheels to build, 12 guage spokes don't like being bent and it's a laborious process reaming out 36 spoke holes to 5mm.

Interesting. I like the 'double decker' rack for the battery.
The hub drive looks tidier than the B-Fun style motors, but does fwd ride ok?

Received wisdom is that FWD on a bike is awesome because it always pulls in the same direction as the steering. I imagine you could get more tyre slippage on very steep wet climbs, but not many people will have to deal with that sort of thing.

In practice, because there isn't a throttle, the assistance is unobtrusive.
Sure, switch off and it's a heavy bike but it does exactly what it says on the tin box . . .

For the record this job has nothing to do with John's Bikes. Vintage Bicycles Holland is the brainchild of Arthur van Rooij, based in Heeswijk, Netherlands. He buys and sells classic steel and has a personal collection of exotica most of us could only wish for.
