Everything Everywhere All At Once

Technically brilliant (editing, cinematography, FX etc) and completely full-on. Also brilliant acting by Michelle Yeoh & Jamie Lee Curtis.

But in reality I thought it was a load of bollocks  :-\.

That sums up my feelings on the matter.  I believe it's canonically a homage to the "I know Kung-fu" scene from The Matrix, and it shows.

As with so many modern films with little in the way of substance, it would have benefited from being about an hour shorter.

Wakanda Forever

It is actually quite a good film. I'm surprised, Marvel has not been great on storylines of late. This was really decent.

Leticia Wright is very good, easily best character in the film. Angela Basset seems to never age and plays a queen very very well.

From Here To Eternity, mainly because it was my father's favourite film.

I wasn't particularly impressed.  The plot goes nowhere, there's no redemption but there is a lot of over-acting.  The best bits were the fight scenes.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Tetris (2023)

A couple of hours of cod-Russian silliness.  You can tell the visual effects team enjoyed themselves.

Not as Halt and Catch Fire as expected.

Worth it for

John Wick 4.

I...

Yes.

It's bum numbing length is made up for by being a remarkably entertaining spectacle. One of the very few sequences of films where the sequels are not only better, but get betterer. ;D

Assuming you like a martial arts/gun/knife/sword thing, of course.

The Snitchers; A 1960s b/w (in black and white) about London's criminal underworld. Stanley Baker had previously committed a robbery and stashed away £40k. Upon his release, other crime figures and the police are on his case to find out what happened to the stolen loot. Harry Andrews  is also in the film, playing the role of a police chief superintendent.

Oh goodie!

Some of the reviews hadn’t been encouraging.

The Big Lebowski

25th anniversary screening at the Curzon.

Such a great film. And, as it turns out, even better in a cinema full of people who love it as much as you do. It really ties the room together.

Loved it. The sequence on the steps, oh my, had the cinema in sympathetic uproar.

Nobody 2021

Somehow Nobody passed me by, until it cropped up on Netflix very recently.  I knew nothing of the plot when I started watching so won't say anything here for those that don't either.  You know that with Bob Odenkirk at the helm you're probably in for a bit of a treat - if you like this kind of offering...  ;)  A really well done film, & pitched at the 'right level' IMO.

Allelujah!

Bloody hell. Whole cinema in tears.

If you haven't seen it, do so.

Oddly, critics hated it.

Quote
Dame Judi Dench can’t save a film whose third act so spectacularly nosedives into “Batshit-Craziest Story Choices Ever Put On Film Hall Of Fame” territory.

Thing is, my better half has nursed in geriatric wards and nursing homes. She didn't find it 'batshit crazy' at all. The plot twist is entirely consistent with behaviour of the characters throughout.

The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young

An account of the crazy 100+ mile ultramarathon trail run that mostly doesnt have any actual trails.
The start is signaled with a 1 hour warning by blowing a conch shell, followed by the ceremonial lighting of a cigarette by the race org to signal the start.

When a runer pulls out (as most do), a bugle plays the Taps to anounce the end of his day.

This reminded me a wee bit of the start of the Midnight Sun 1200k, where the start was signaled by a saxophone playing us out.
Some of the competitive cameraderie reminded me of things like the 24h TT.

Only an hour, worth a watch.

Reminiscent of the 314-mile Last Annual Vol State Road Race across Tennessee, which begins with all the runners (+walkers + crawlers) crossing the Mississippi by ferry and the organizer lighting a cigarette.  It is totally unsupported.  Friends of ours do it every year.  One of them sent us a pic of her doing a 1-arm plank on the Bench of Despair, 187 miles in.

The Road Dance

(BBC scotland)

Almost entirely filmed in Gearrrannan blackhouse village, and making the most of the local coastal scenery.

Very moving film, a simple story.

I don't watch many movies but last Saturday made pizza so we kids insisted we had a movie and I had to watch. They chose the portable door. They seemed to enjoy it, I tried to sneak out but wasn't allowed. It's not very good and unlikely to make me want to watch any more films anytime soon

Shame as I googled it after watching to see if was just me who doesn't like films and people seemed to be saying the book its based on is good

And to think that Walter Duranty of the New York Times was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1932 for his reporting about the same crime against humanity (including slandering Gareth Jones for reporting what was really happening).

"Far From The Madding Crowd".  The 1967 production,   I've seen this before as part of my GCE English Literature course in 1980 something.  Faithful to the novel (which I've never re-read) and beautifully shot.   It's a long film though, I ended up watching over 2 evenings.
