Seatpost Binder Bolt
« on: 25 January, 2022, 04:23:56 pm »
I have a steel frame Muddy Fox MTB circa 1994 from back in the day when mountain bikes were just beefed up road bikes, so 26 inch wheels and solid forks.

It has always had a quick release seatpost binder bolt which is fairly useless, the seatpost slips down quite quickly and although it is just my "pub" bike it does get annoying.  The two lugs on the seat tube clamp are made for a proper binder bolt as it has the little square recess in one of them so I bought a new binder bolt to replace the quick release.  The problem is that the new bolt is 8mm in diameter but the hole through the lugs is about 7mm in diameter.  All the binder bolts that I can find on-line are 8mm in diameter.  I know that I could just buy an ordinary bolt and use that or possibly drill out the lugs so that I could then use the 8mm binder bolt, but is there somewhere that can supply a slightly smaller diameter binder bolt so that I can do the job properly?

SJS have the best selection I know (scroll down), but you might need to call them with that specific question.

This pops up on eBay by searching for '7mm seatpost bolt'  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164355782992?hash=item26445e3950:g:St0AAOSwBM9fA3IF

There are some shinier ones from the USA if you're prepared to pay around £30 - includes postage.
Finished with my woman 'cause she couldn't help me with my mind

Thanks, I'll give them a call, although that's where I bought the 8mm one, they don't list any smaller ones, but a phone call will confirm if they do.

I'll try that search, thanks. At £30 a standard bolt starts to look attractive!

That's fugly. OK it's just a normal nut and bolt.

A proper allen key seat bolt costs a few pounds (not from the USA). Even a Campagnolo one, or it seems at least they used to.
