Hedge cutting time - early September?
« on: 08 August, 2019, 05:28:37 pm »
My partner and I are cycling to Suffolk from our home in Germany at the beginning of September.

I have sensible tyres on my Milan (Durano Plus at the front, Marathon Greenguard at the back) but he has Conti Speed at the front and Tiogas at the rear of his QuattroVelo. Not all that puncture resistant.

When is the proper hedge cutting season, as he is wondering whether he should change to something a bit tougher? The German roads are much kinder than Uk ones, plus we don’t really have hedges here.

Those dates do not apply to hedges trimmed because they affect the safety of the public highway, they can be trimmed anytime. In the narrow hedged lanes where I live on the Wales/Herefordshire border this started at least a week ago. An annual hazard.

Having said that a bit of rain soon softens the debris making it much less of a problem to navigate!

We’re travelling next weekend and it looks like it’s dry until then - so sharp thorns. We are just hoping the farmers won’t do mega cutting until after we’ve returned to the Fatherland!

I wouldn't be too concerned about it - it's only recently-cut narrow hedged lanes which might be a problem, and minor detours are often possible. The worst case in my experience was having to walk/push a few hundred metres to get past a bad bit.

The inconvenience of the get-off-and-walk case increases substantially when what you're riding diverges from an upright bicycle.  Anything with multiple wheel tracks will probably have to be pulled backwards, while being harder to avoid the spiky stuff (especially when you can't see what the wheels are doing because it's fully faired).

Also the Quattrovelo with luggage is around 40-45kg.

Klaus has prepared... 4 x Marathon Greenguards now on. This is Emily without any shoes on

He says they are much more noisy than the previous Contis/GoCycles, plus 2 km/h slower. But puncture prevention is good!

We had to rob two Marathons from my trike in the garage and put Shreddas on the trike. I got a puncture 500 metres later on the trike. This is why I always had Marathons on it!!

Hedge cutting has started today in one bit of South Salop.

They're also liability on thinly-spread chutney in a way that is largely irrelevant on a multitrack vehicle unless you're having a particularly bad day... (DAHIKT)
