Yay! Debden for the start, and then a secret control later in the week.

Last time around we had airbeds set up in a different part of the school.

I was part of the Brampton team and I think it worked quite well as our area was off limits to riders, we had our own toilets and washbasins, but not showers. It was fairly peaceful and we each bagged our own spot for our bed and belongings. I think the women had the sixth form common room and the men had one or two classrooms.

And of course we could also keep our bikes in there for those that cycled to Brampton.

Looks like I'll be on the move between controls as a roving volunteer - a bit like a flying picket but in a red t-shirt!  Not a lot of sleep can be anticipated for that week, I suspect.
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

Very similar to how Spalding worked. There were some classrooms used as sleeping accommodation and a common room - all off limits to riders.
Air beds etc.

Apologies if this has been asked before.  LEL is way beyond my capabilities however I would be happy to help as a volunteer.  Is there a central contact or website where I could leave my details?  Or do I just check the route and controls and get in touch?

I registered to do moto assistance. At the moment haven't heard anything concrete other than the end of December "It's getting real" email so not confirmed on the team yet. I rode it in 2009 and 2013, doing it with a motor will be a different experience (I'm NEG 1 with British Cycling).

Is there any sort of volunteer sleeping facility for the pre-start formalities? I'd like to help if I can be useful (before going to a control for the event) but I'm not local and commuting fromthe family in Oxford might be prohibitive (cost and timewise). Or are pre-start volunteers necessarily local?

In 17 a few volunteers camped in the school grounds at the start.  Your alternate is Debden campsite which is 1.2km up the road and where a few riders will also be camping.

You really don't want to be commuting if it can be avoided.
I helped for Friday and Saturday at Loughton. A very few volunteers (+1 caveman, some will guess who) slept under canvas. Personally I had two nights at the Rotherhithe YH which was by the pub designated for the Friday night pre-ride action. Shared a room with an Audax leader whom I'd only read about (in awe). Train journey down and across the Thames was painless, and easy on Saturday morning in good time to be well ready for my start at noon.

Sleep? As a volunteer? Sorry, I think you need to be a rider if you want sleep.
 ;D
(I'm thinking of camping at Debden to get a mix of both sides of planet Audax.)
