Author Topic: Seeking Advice for Family Cycling Holiday in Holland or Belgium  (Read 2143 times)

Hello everyone,

I'm seeking some advice for planning a family cycling holiday, and I know this community has a wealth of knowledge and ideas to offer.

Mrs GC recently surprised me by suggesting a cycling holiday through Holland or Belgium, and I'm eager to make it happen. We're considering either a "hub and spoke" or circular route, covering around 20 to 30 miles each day. It will be her first time embarking on such an adventure, so we want to keep things relatively easy-going.

Our preference is to have a base camp from which we can explore the surrounding areas. Camping along the route is an option, but we think having a central base would be more convenient for most of the trip.

Does anyone have suggestions for scenic routes, charming towns to visit, or tips for planning a cycling holiday in this region? We're open to recommendations on everything from accommodations to must-try places to eat or drink.

Looking forward to hearing your ideas!

My experience is that leisure cycling is much better in the Netherlands than in Belgium as the infrastructure is better.

Our experience is that cycling in BE & NL is very similar though we haven't ventured north of Zeeland onna bike.

We generally spent a week based in Brugges or Ghent and do day rides from there. The cities have a good choice of pubs and restaurants and you can usually find good food and drink when out and about. Mrs P likes Hoeve Hazegras for ice cream.

Here’s a few ideas based on trips we have done:
1. Texel: beautiful island to explore. Visit neighbouring island too
2. Rotterdam/Hook of Holland/Den Haag: Kinderdijk, Delft, Gouda, Coastal barriers
3. Ypres: WW1 stuff (more interesting that you’d think), Belgian seaside
4. Oudenaarde: Rivers and canals, famous Tour of Flanders climbs
5. Bastogne: Ardennes forests, WW2 stuff, Luxembourg

Thank you all for your fantastic suggestions!

Thank you Auntie Helen, I appreciate your insight on the Netherlands having better cycling infrastructure. Your blog is inspiring – any specific routes you recommend for families? (also tempting to get a velomobile...)

Pingu, basing in Brugges or Ghent for day rides sounds liek a good idea. Hoeve Hazegras for ice cream is noted! Any family-friendly routes or attractions you'd suggest? Are you awware of any campsites near by?

Yoav, your detailed list is very helpful! Texel and Ypres sound intriguing. Are the routes in these areas novice cyclist -friendly? Any must-see spots?

Thanks again for all your advice.

I would suggest looking at the Biesbosch for a few days, especially if you fancy a bit of gentle canoeing to mix up the activities (hire seemed cheap compared to the UK!) and you like nature. We found a lovely campsite last September, there is also a Stayokay hostel. You don't say what age "family" is but I am sure all ages would enjoy the little ferry crossings. Dordrecht is not far away and is accessible from Rotterdam by fast ferry which takes bikes. You can also get to Kinderdijk fairly easily to see the windmills.
The knoopunt network is your friend for cycle routing throughout the Netherlands and Northern Belgium.

Well most of it is novice friendly. These areas are mostly flat, or along canals and rivers, except for the Ardennes and The Tour of Flanders climbs.

Every area has a "must see". In Ypres, the In Flanders Fields museum and the Menin Gate are must sees. You really don't have to be into WW1 stuff to be moved by them. If your'e near Rotterdam then the Kinderdijk windmills are also a must see.

You don't say how you plan to get to your holiday destination or where in the UK you are from as that may make a difference.

I've stayed at both of these sites & they are OK, though both a decent walk from the town centres.

Yes, we've done lots of similar tours as a family. I don't think you can go wrong, really! How old are the kids?
We started cycle touring in Belgium and the Netherlands when my three were young primary school ages. We're now the full gamut of teens, and still loving it!

Bhoot's suggestion of the Biesbosch is a good one. There are some extra little ferries that run in the summer, and get you right into the heart of the area (although they do get busy and you might have a hefty wait!). But really you can't go wrong.

Belgium is cheaper than the Netherlands, by and large. Stick with Flanders for better infrastructure (the first time anyway, as Wallonia is beautiful). We've particularly enjoyed the Limburg area of Belgium, these were the highlights:

What ages are your kids? Which ferry would you likely get? Are you driving over or cycling all the way?

She’s 13

I expect that we will be driving over.

We will probably get the train across to Calais

Okay, so here's some more ideas! I'm no good on fixed-base camping, as we've always done touring and hostels. But here's some places my offspring have enjoyed as young teens:

- From Calais, you could do worse than just staying on the Belgian coast. Lovely cycling along the coast (some nice big public art I recall), nice cycling along the canals.
We particularly enjoyed the hostel in Oostduinkerke, called De Peerdevisser. If you head out to the beach first thing, you might see the horses - they are used for shrimp fishing (hence "peerdevisser").
Nearer the border with the Netherlands, this place absolutely worth a visit: https://bizarium.com/en/
Ghent, Brugge: very nice, possibly a bit busy. We've done them with the kids on tandems, I think I would avoid now that we are all on solos (or stay outside the town and public transport in). Bruges does have a great chip museum though.  ;D
Mechelen is a nice little city. If you are into science museums then this place is great: https://www.technopolis.be/en/

- To add to Yoav's suggestion of Rotterdam/Hook/The Hague, here's some things we enjoyed round there:
the dune cyclepath from Hook to Scheveningen (ideally with the wind!)
stay in the cube houses in Rotterdam: https://www.stayokay.com/en/hostel/rotterdam
(worth also visiting the museum cube house)
ESA Space centre at Katwijk: https://www.space-expo.nl/en
Escher museum in The Hague: https://www.escherinhetpaleis.nl/?lang=en
We enjoyed Zaanse Schans more than Kinderdijk: https://www.dezaanseschans.nl/en/
All the windmills are different, milling different things. We found Kinderdijk a bit too busy for our liking last year. Whereas Zaanze Schans is a bit more spread out and really interesting - I remember being wowed by the sawmill and a paint mill.
I reckon at 13 this place might be a bit young, but I've included it anyway as yesterday my 15 year-old expressed an interest in returning:
https://www.linnaeushof.nl/en/
So it's like a funfair theme park, but everything is people-powered! Great fun.

- the Limburg area of Belgium is lovely. Close enough to the Netherlands to enjoy trying another country, with the previously-mentioned points of interest (cycling through trees is huge fun, we spent an hour last year going round and round) and more besides. Enough tourist action to make things easy but not that busy. The Belgian canals are great for cycling along.

My kids have enjoyed staying in hostels because of the wonder that is sprinkles (Hagelslag) for breakfast.

The only snag might be booking somewhere - you might find that there's more availability towards the end of August than the beginning of the summer holidays, depending on how touristy the area is. But basically, I reckon you can't really go wrong!

Brugges and Ghent both have family-friendly youth hostels as well.

Ypres is worth a trip as well, as are a number of surrounding villages.  Accommodation can be pricey there though.
