Glasgow central station to Dumbarton

Hi,

I am starting a Scottish cycle tour on Saturday. I am catching the sleeper on Friday night and have first to get to Dumbarton to start the first day's ride.

I keep getting routed onto the A814 that has spear junctions and looks like a motorway.

Does anybody have any local knowledge to help me get on some mode cycle friendly roads?

Cycle to Queen Street and get a train to Dunbarton? I know the rolling stock, as that is the western end of the line I use to commute on, and you will not have a problem turning up and rolling your bike onto a train without a reservation for it.
(Can't help with cycling routes, though!)

I threw it into the useful www.cycle.travel and it suggested this - looks like a signed route close to, but not on, the A814

As above. It’s a decent old railway / canal type path.

Double as above. I cycled that exact route last summer. It's pretty good as cycle routes go. Well signed too....

Take the train from Central Station Low Level to Partick. There is a lift downwards if you ask the location.
Two lifts in fact if I am not wrong - one to ticket hall level then one to platform.
Change at Partick for train to Dumbarton.

As others have said there is a cycle route all along that way, following the old railway line to Clydebank then the canal to Bowling.
At Bowling the route continues along an old railway line.
I dont live in Glasgow any more, so may have the exact details wrong.

For info, when you arrive at Central you can go out the Gordon Street exit (where the taxis are). You can find supermarkets straight ahead and to the left - Sainsbury and Tesco. there is a Coop in the CaDoro building to the right.
There are cafes there and in Union Street for breakfast.

I would be careful of locking a bike in that area - early in the morning a friendly security guard might allow you to park inside the shop door.

I did a tour recently that started at Dumbarton. But I got off my sleeper there, so I don't have any suggestion beyond the train.

When we did the Dumb Run, we used to just cram everyone onto the low level train from Queen Street. We've had 6 people (and pizza) on one carriage.

And easier than faffing about with trains.
Come out of central, and head down to the riverside, about 500m.   Follow the cyclepath west until you get to Dumbarton.
The roads are fine to ride too though until after old kilpatrick.  I recommend the cyclepaths for the first few km, and then from Clydebank

I will give this a try on. Added the track to my set for the trip 

I rode on Saturday morning. Great route, avoids main roads and we'll signposted. Was a bit left and right cross road here for a while as it got out of the centre, but a great ride option.

I would ride it again.
